Hi all, I'm a laser newbie & need some advice ASAP. :)

Im looking for a powerful green handheld laser, & have narrowed it down to these two:

Wicked Lasers: Green Spyder II GX (200-300mW)
Optotronics: Green RPL-375 (375mW)

I wouldnt dare buy a hercules as their way out of my price range :(

Ive come to the relization that WL arnt what they claim to be, nore close. Im reading that their lasers don't put out the power output that their meant to, not even close. And if thats true then WTF are they still in business??

I really like the spyders sexy look, compact size, 100% duty cycle. but alot of ppl recomend optotronics with real output power, cheaper pricing, more trustworthy companie. The things im a little weary of with the RPL375 is, its bigger size, & 5mins duty cycle & 2mins cooling.

BTW Ive had a interest in the spyders for well over a year now, & ive tried contacting WL asking them certian questions, but they never give me a answer im happy with. Other then "our lasers are the best" bla bla bla

So if you could reply with some advice, that would be very helpful. thx

Dont go with the spyder somone here had measured one and it was only putting out 150mw, looks arent everything.  Would you rather have a sport car with a v1 engine in it or a plain truck with a v8 in it, its what inside that matters.  The rpls are going to be always above what they say and the size really isnt that big its still just about right bigger then a pen but not like a labby it feels like you have real power compared to holding a pen or so.  And if you ever get a bad laser or need a question optotronics service is very excelent so overall go with the rpl 375 you wont be disapointed with the adjustable output to change between pointing or burning and comare the power between them and, well thats not even a comparison....150mw for the spyder or 375mw or more for the rpl.  If you want a laser that looks good but mode hops underpowerd and less then aceptable customer service go with wl.  If you want a great laser with guaranteed above output excelent customer service adjustable output to save battery life...go with optotronics you wont be disapointed.

First off, Spyder two will most likely be below 200mW after 5-10min. Thats what I learned from few people who owned one or even 3 Spyders by now.
Looks arent everything, and 100% duty cycle is not what you think it is in Spyders.

Second, as wooooooolazer stated, RPL always come performing at higher output in first 1-4min than rated. Duty cycle is about 3-5 min at max performance (at least the two RPLs I tested) and over 20min at level 1-2. Depending on the battery.
If you really need more than that for a laser to be ON at a time, than go with lab lasers.

I was also debating between Spyder 2 and RPL325(at the time) and I can only thank Pseudo for telling me the real performances of both. It was an easy choice then, and RPL has proven to be even more than expected.

Tecnically speaking, you cant really make a V with 1 cylinder...

Just throwing that out there

Hi Flashanator,
Welcome to the LPF, I think it was probably you who emailed me this morning for the Spyder 2 vs. RPL-375 info.
The reason they are still in business is that they are masters of advertising or maybe I should say propaganda. Their advertising mostly targets the new/inexperienced laserists and there is always a supply of them. Since they are located in a place where there are no "truth in advertising" and consumer protection laws, they can say whatever they want to whether it's true or not.

btw, I wouldn't worry about run time /duty cycle, 5 minutes is quite a long time, and at +375mW it won't take nearly as long to do with it whatever needs to get done if you know what I mean.

yeah, i shoullda called it a I1 instead of a v1, lol, its in the shape of an I, you would probhave to measure it in mousepower instead of horsepower :p[/offtopic]

Definitely go with the RPL! As others have stated the output is higher than listed. My RPL400 peaks at 444mw and averages 421mw. Low divergence and tight beam. It takes less than a second to sting my skin! PLUS the customer service from Jack is exceptional! He takes care of his customers.....period!

Another thing to consider is that if you have a problem with your Spyder piece of you know what, you have to ship it back to China I believe......Optotronics is Colorado (not that you will have any problems though).

After experiencing Wickeds fascist, Nazi like controlling of what you read on their forum, I would stay the hell away from them. You will NOT be disappointed with the RPL lasres...trust me!

Nope, not custom. Jack gets in higher power units from time to time. He doesn't advertise them all the time. If you ask for one he could probably take care of you. When I upgraded from my RPL300 I was going to get an RPL375. Jack just happened to mention that he had some RPL400's in. Didn't even have time to post them on his website yet.
