Um. How much space do you need?

This was apparently set up in less than half a square foot of desk space heh.

I have about the same space, but my house is a shambles, seriously! You wouldn't even let a dog live here! My fault for partying for several days solid! My point isn't just the lack of space, it's the fact that if I dropped anything, it'd be lost to all time!!!
As I'm working on a low budget I'm not going to risk loosing or breaking parts so I'm waiting till the place is clean before attempting anything like that! And I think I'm gonna read more as well though I think my first true build will still have a lot of hiccups

Also randomlugia I did put quite a bit into it but, as qumefox pointed out, it's not a from scratch build though I maintain pride in it for the sole point that I think it's daym good for my first venture into green. As for extracting the diode, the design of the 'New wish' hosts means you can unscrew the bottom with the diode in it then it's a little bit of fiddley work getting the diode out and puttin a new one in, after that connect the new diode to the driver board with wires and try it out, luckily this didn't happen with mine, but if anything's mis-alligned that gives you a chance to streighten it without having to take the driver board off!

about how much would it cost to build a decent 532nm DPSS? im a beginner, so im not really worried about power... yet...

Your probably looking at around $100ish to get a few mw of green. The proper AR coated ND:YV04 and KTP crystals are available from o-like. $36 for one and $14 for the other. though I think they're out of stock on one. Can't remember which. On top of that you need at minimum, a 808nm IR diode and driver for it, and a properly coated OC as well. I thought this was available from o-like as well but I couldn't find it on their website the last time I looked. The crystals should be good for 200mw of green but it'd likely take 1W plus of 808 to get anywhere near that, plus it would involve TEC's, etc, and that adds to the cost considerably.

DVD burners will have relatively strong 650nm diodes. How strong depends on what speed burner it is. I'm not sure what type of package the LD's in a laptop drive will be though. If it's not a to-18 5.6mm can, it's probably going to be hard, but not impossible, to do much with.

Higher power DPSS Lasers need larger crystals, most assuredly. They also require much larger pump diodes and precise alignment as when you get into the higher end of the power curve with DPSS you have to consider that composite crystals don't exist. Once you start dabbling in professional level equipment, expect to encounter professional level headfucks. Composite crystals are, generalisation ahead, for low powered lasers. When you start getting serious and getting quotes on separate crystals, you'll notice there is a size disparity between the NdYVO4 and the KTP Crystal on is short and fat and the other is long and thin, that is the best design for the best output, it is the reason why high power DPSS Lasers don't use composite crystals, the mismatch in the crystal sizes for the task at hand starts to exceed the capacity of composite crystals.

Aligning the diode, the two crystals, the mirrors and the lenses is not an amateur friendly task. Add to that the need for a serious <600nm cutoff filter (to remove the pump & the IR from the NdYVO4 will save your eyesight, 808nm diodes are underrated in the permanent damage they can and will do to the unprepared, once they get into the multiple watt category, they are capable of blinding, completely & permanently rather rapidly).

Then you could get really excited and start attaching multi-Watt 808nm Pump Diodes to a multiplexing arrangement, with the concept being to output the lot into the back end of a crystal, this is seriously a job for professionals (they don't need degrees, just commonsense and a knowledge of what the fuck they are doing). Finding large enough crystals to allow for them to be pumped by 100W of 808nm Light and output in the 10W Green range is my personal dream (one day).
