The brightness perceived between two lasers of the same wavelength is not linear either. You won't see three time the brightness in a 300 mW compared to a 100 mW laser of the same wavelength. I have a 1350 mW 532nm green laser that doesn't look 13 times brighter than a 100 mW one. Your brain doesn't work like that, nor do your eyes.

I haven't seen one exactly like the one you pulled out of the dead unit, but it is the same size as my 200 mW modules without the aluminum sleeve around it.

Have you tested it with a multimeter to see if it still draws current? If it doesn't, that's a better sign that it is just a contact issue somewhere.

Looks like a nice host, if it was me I would put a lower powered 520nm diode in it. You could probably get a custom heatsink made to fit the 12mm module from DTR.
