Question about making a long duty cycle laser

Hey guys, I am trying to make a longer duty cycle out of a C6 host with copper tapered heat sink, and a NDG7475 1w diode. At 1amp it's putting out 650mw, while at 800ma it's putting out 500mw roughly. I am thinking though for this little host 1amp is going to definitely be too much over longer periods of time. So at 800ma in a little C6 host should I get near continuous duty cycles without worrying about excessive heat? I mean it's rated for three times that current.

Appreciate any input, I'm new here!

Looks like you started two threads on the exact same topic, please keep the discussion to one if possible and PM the mods to delete the other. That makes everything easier to find for everyone involved, rather than having two threads with diverging discussion.

Define near continuous? How long do you want to run it? How long do you want to let it cool?

There are two things you need to be concerned with when trying to make a laser with a long duty cycle.
1-The diode produces heat which needs to be dispersed into the host effectively.
2-The driver has components which produce heat, and you also need to heatsink the drinker properly or it will be damaged.

If both of these are done properly and the laser is driven conservatively, the duty cycle should be unlimited.

I am wanting something to run for 30+ minutes without worrying about heating up the diode. Doesn't really matter how long for cool down times.

Hi,
30 + minutes in a C6 host no way maybe 1 minute to play it safe. That NDG puts out some heat . have a C6 host with a full copper sink and knob i made and with that diode 1 minute or a little more is the most. I make copper sinks and focus knobs for the C6

Ok thanks for the info. So for a continuous run I'm probably better off going with the Osram PL520B with a <300ma driver?

You're better going for something that isn't a pointer if you want long run times. You want a module with a beefy heatsink and mains power really.

Yep, heat dissipation is crucial for long run times. The worst case scenario from having insufficient cooling for a diode is thermal runaway. Not a good way for your diode to die.

Big heat sink, lots of battery capacity and you have it. What you want to build isn't that heavy with heat compared to some of the new high power laser diodes, not difficult.

Don't worry about the red if you are a sincere member, if I see you stop posting the same question in other sections and start observing forum etiquette , I will pay back far more than I took in three days. Also, if someone disagrees with me you will get repped back into green today, I bet, netting more rep than you would have had otherwise.

I think this guy is genuine Alaskan, he said he didn't know how to remove the other thread so Hap merged them. He didn't cause a fuss about it. So as long as you don't mind I will put him back in the green. He will soon get the hang of things round here. :)

I had to balance him out again. I think your tactic is good for those who are clearly breaking the rules however.
