Power increase, NiMh 1.2v vs. Lithium 1.7v

So when I was in Taiwan I picked up a no name 80mw greenie, so far it’s been nice but the thing cant even pop black balloons or leave marks in trash bags. So I have been wondering if it is indeed 80mw...
I have an energy meter at work but have just been too lazy to grab it.
Anyways at the moment I have 2 NiMh 850 mAh AAAs in it but these are the 1.2v,
If I replace them with 2 Lithium e2 1.7v batteries what do you think that would do?

And I’m a little wary about trying to open this thing up but do you think pot modding would be a good idea?

I've pot modded say 15 lasers the only time it seem to work was when the laser was a leadlight. My infinity  worked a little it went from 80 to 110 mw for a month then back to 80 , newish dilda nada oh yea i did pot mod a dx labby that worked also.But other than that i wouldn't really recommend it though

It's not 80mW, I would try different batteries, but don't pot mod it, that will most likely break it.

If the greenie is meant for 1.5V alkaline batteries, then 1.7V would not be such an increase. Rather, with 1.2V NiMH it would be much dimmer than meant to be.

I wonder what the open loop voltage of the e2 is. I mean, the same way alkaline can get as high as 1.8V, hoe much is the e2? And now I think about it, aren't e2 batteries 1.5V? Did you measure them or read it from text on the body?

sorry, I may be mistaken about the e2's, but i have read that there are some batteries that run at 1.7v.
anyways i connected the pointer to a variable power supply and turned off current limiting, heres what i measured: (this is an I/V curve at the power leads feeding the driver, not on the diode!)

2.0v at 20mA
2.4v at 170mA. (NiMh voltages)
2.5v at 250mA
3.0v at 280mA (Alkaline/lithium voltages)
3.4v (Yet to be determined!)

I cannot decern any brightness change between 2.6v to 3.0v. if i go any lower than 2.5 the brightness drops out very quickly and is dark at around 2.1v!

do you thing a quick bump at 3.4v will hurt it?

If the intensity does not increase after 2.6V then it is either optically (photodiode) regulated or a constant-current source needing just that much. Either way, supplying more volts will not blow your diode. It will only cause the driver board to heat up more. (which might pose a problem of it is built at borderline specs)

I sure hope not!

Well I guess ill stick with my NiMh for now, unless I can find who makes it and a model, or if I feel like disassembling it.

but that sucker is glued in there pretty good :(

and at 38mA that is one weak green pointer. My 50mW DX needs 200mA at the same voltage to emit 40mW

Not even the pump is emitting 80mW at that current. You were ripped.

Lol, I know. but i got it when i went to Taiwan. it was pretty bright and i only paid a little over 35 USD.

so it wasnt that bad of a rip.

I really have to get the diode/driver assy out and see if i can do anything!

but tommorrow ill put it on the energy meter and see just what i get

modding, for the most part, depends on efficientcy/size of the crystals, how much current the pump can take, and how much current/voltage the driver can take. so mainly you got the whole laser to think about :D lol

yea best to leave it alone buy a nova x50 or somthing like that :eek:
