So here i am
just purchased a brand new optoronics green pen laser 100 mW (and peaks 120...but thats not that important for this)
so i open it up and what do i see? a screw, and when screwed in, the output power can be increased up to the maximum output the diode is capable of (150 mW)!!!!!

...lol, just kidding...sorry
BUT, i was actually wondering if anyone has actually opened up an optotronics green pen laser recently, to see if the diode is the same but there is some sort of controller that regulates how much this thing can output, and would it explain why optoronics lasers are always overspec??

p.s. this is a GREAT laser, im definitely going to write a review later

A lot of times, things like this are binned. I know Optotronics wouldn't be running a shady operation.

Generally what companies will do, is indeed have the same diodes and drivers, all set at the same current - but DPSS crystal set efficiency just plain old varies.

So, some of those diodes running at say, 300mA into the pump diode may put out 100mW after all is said and done, and some may put out 150mW. Some may put out 80mW.

So it's not as simple as just using different diodes and drivers. Usually companies like Optotronics use their spec as a "minimum", whereas others will use it as a "peak" rating.

a 100mW Optotronics pen laser may -bottom out- at 100mW at times, whereas something from a no-name chinese seller may peak at that rating if the stars are aligned.

Being able to regulate the voltage is not why the laser is overspec.
It's usually because the diode is more "efficient" and the optics are higher quality.
IMO.

Um... what Aryntha said.

The reason there are so few responses is because we're laughing so hard that some of us ended up in the ER.

Like the Monty Python skit where someone told the world's funniest joke and people died.

Someone heard the first 6 or 7 words and ended up in a coma... :)

sorry I could not hold myself  ;)

how about you?
did you think my joke was funny?

oh btw moebius.. on that drivers you regulate current, not voltage.

If you told me the laser was lpm'd at 1.21 jijjawatts, I'd be more willing to accept a lol :)

Your avatar picture is totally disturbing! I can't even look at a spider. I watched some you tube videos of a laser burning spiders to death. Just watching them move about was disturbing. They looked almost as big as the one on the side of your face.
