I got my Nova 125mw X-series today. WOW, I love it! I also got the lens kit, but I can't seem to burn. It came with a collimating lens, which is what I thought i used to burn, but when i put on the lens and point it at a wall it looks like a star map 3 feet by 3 feet. It is suppose to do this? I tried burning up close with and without the lens with no luck. Any tips? I am new to lasers and am probably doing something wrong. Thanks for any help.

When you shine it on the wall with the lens do you see one big dot or 2 dots
here is a photo...

and the star map thing might just be dirt on the lens try cleaning it off.

your x125 should have no problems burning.... well what are you trying to burn?

A 125mW laser should have enough power to burn through black electric tape and light a dark tipped match.  My 95mW can do these easily especially with a cap set on.  It's better to contact nova for support and tell them about it.

Taken from 4 feet from the wall with collimating lens. Please tell me if the diameter should be smaller. My collimating lens has a chip on the side but doesnt seem that it would affect the lens at all. Also I noticed Nova is out of stock now on these lenses, maybe I got the last one lol.

Regular Energizer batteries. The light is brighter without the lens. The orb on the wall is at least 2x the diamater when the lens is put in. Is this normal?

make sure you have found its focal point. thats where the dot is the smallest.

Ok. I can get it to sting my hand without the lens, but I put the lens on and it doesn't do anything. Dumb way to do it I guess but easiest way.

the focal length is probably only about 3-4 inches from the lens at most, try burning things close to the laser and slowly pull it away until it starts burning

Try using Lithium batteries. also how big is the dot without the lens? and what are you trying to burn?
If it stings your skin with out the lens it sounds like its fine. but if you are using the lens you have to burn at the smallest point of the beam. i think the focal length of novas lenses is 15mm but im not sure

I have the nova lens holder that came with the laser collimating lens, and the focal point on it is less than an inch so try the laser really close to what your are burning. I bought the meniscus lens because the focal point is much farther away. Personally i don't like their collimating lens because the focal point is less than an inch away. To find the focal point, stat shinning the laser on what you want to burn from a few inches away and slowly move closer until it starts smoking. When you get it right, it will burn like a beast. Again, the focal point on my nova collimating lens is at an inch or less. Hope this helps.

Thanks to all of you. I tried it at about 1/2 inch without the lens and was able to burn SOLO plastic cups. Works Great! Where can I get a meniscus lens along with other various lenses didn't see any more on NOVA's site?

Don't burn things so close.... You'll get smoke contamination on the lens inside the laser.

Way to read the topic, guy. The lens he has REQUIRES he do this, because that's where the focal point is.
