No IR Filter?

I heard that True DX 30's are meant to have IR filters on, But i did a little test on my laser, and it looks like it has no filter.

What i did was shine the laser through a bottle of Coca-Cola, with a camera on the other side. This blocks out most of the visible light, and allows IR to be seen. I assume the purple is IR? If so, is it safe, or should i get an IR filter?

This is what the video showed.

Its safe, there is no need for concern for IR from a 30mW pointer.

There might be a weak filter, but even if their isnt the IR isnt dangerous, the green however you should be careful with.

Could you shine your laser through cola towards a wall and look at the wall with the camera so I can get a better idea of the IR anyway, so I can give you a definite yes or no as to wether it has a filter or not.

it seems hit and miss, some DX lasers are well filtered (one i had output only a fraction of a mW) and some seem to output much more

either way it's not enough power to be concerned with

Here is the IR against the wall

What's the big deal with IRs?

If they are only a fraction of the laser power, how could it be more dangerous than the laser beam itself? Of course not those ones that has crappy IR like 80% IR and 20% green...shouldn't people be more careful with the laser beam itself?

also, many people here are blaming wicked for under specs lasers, yet how many people know that with IR filter, you can expect a laser power to reduce as much as 40% of the full power output. as far as I know, filters not only weaken the IR but also reduce the power at the light source as a whole, or am I wrong about this?

I don't know for sure, but in my opinion, wicked lasers is marketing their products as its unfiltered power although the filtered power is much less...anyone has a thought on this?

Actually, I think the real danger is when you're using goggles to block out the green, because then the light doesn't look bright to your eyes and the pupils remain dialated.

With those "True" lasers, I'm guessing it's more that the crystals inside are higher quality, so they turn more of the IR into green light, not so much that they stuck some filter in front. For me to consider a green laser filtered, it better generate as little IR as a PGL-III.

I've got this same laser, and I was wondering about the IR myself. So last night I took my digital camera and used it to look for IR, and I noticed that within about the first second or two of turning the laser on, ther is an actual BEAM of IR shining slightly to the side of the green laser. It goes away pretty quickly and doesn't come back until the laser cools and I turn it back on.

Should I be worried about this temporary second beam?? :-?

Can you give us a picture of this? Are you sure it was a secondary beam and not just the camera blooming?

Sure, I'll see if I can get a decent picture of it. Quick question, how do I post pictures/video once I get one?
