Re: New Nichia 9mm 1W 520nm diode

Being that now all 3 diodes red, blue & green will now have similar beam profiles would it then be easier to not have any overlap with red and blue over the green like you would have if you used a solid state 532nm system since its beam profile is more round.?

Indeed but really the scanner mirrors waist quite a bit it.

PT-30 Scanners have pretty big mirrors which would be perfect for a very small RGB build based on 1W blue, 1W green and 2 x PBS P73.

Might be a nice idea to make a challenge now, who can make the smallest 3W RGB projector :) that runs at 30k scan rate.

Re: New Nichia 9mm 1W 520nm diode

A few notes about diodes.

520 9.0mm 1.0W (46 x 11) Nichia ( Will be ok in laser projectors)
445 9.0mm 1.0W (44 x 14) Nichia ( Proven to be ok in laser projectors )
635 5.6mm 0.5W (35 x 7 ) Mitsubishi ( Proven to be ok in laser projectors )

Are those facet dimensions?

If they are, the ratio from reds (7/35) ~= the ratio from greens (11/46).

I would expect divergence very similar to that of the red diode.

Lol its at a $ per mw. Just as expensive as DPSS at the moment. I would be so happy if the price of these dropped below 200 EVENTUALLY. I can wait a year or two. :D

Thats divergence in degrees (º). The green diode is 11º parallel divergence and 46º perpendicular divergence.

$ per mW if not over overpowered but yep they are not so cheap yet. Maybe if a Video projector starts to use them, the price will fall to < 50 dollars. I suspect given the design and specifications is very similar to the 445 1W, I suspect they are destined for some video projector.

I guess it's safe to assume these are multi-mode?

Not really. That only means that the same company (nichia) manufactures both diodes...

@ixfd64
Sure they are. Look the big divergence...

Re: New Nichia 9mm 1W 520nm diode

Let's see. If the blue 9mm is rated at 1.6W at 1.7A and we get over 3W driving them at 2.3A or more.... I wonder how much green we can get if we drive this over 2.3A. :eg:

I don't think anybody's gonna try that too soon, at least when the diodes are at their current price :p we'll find out eventually

I wonder who the rich guy was on ebay that bought 3 at $950 each

No need to wait for one or two years. I bet these will beat DPSS $/W in 6 months. Maybe not the low power greens (<100mW), which are really cheap on ebay, but I'm almost certain about the high power ones.

In two years I guess DPSS 532nm will be used only in applications that need WL stability or a better beam profile.

As for the divergence, IF the ratio of the fast axis/slow axis raw divergence translates directly into beam specs - which I'm not completely sure - these are at 4.2, between the 445nm 9mm (at 3.1) and the 500mW 638nm (at 4.7). Pretty bad indeed. I'm hoping these numbers don't actually mean anything.

Mind you guys this is only the first version of the diode. It'll get revised and fix up the beam specs slightly in all likeliness.

Well DPSS 532 is around $650-700/W in lab lasers. Hand held they are already about the same per W, although the DPSS has better divergence. It would be a miracle if we found these Nichia diodes in a cheaper projector like the A140s :D

You probably don't have to wait that long. The 445nm diode was $500 when they first appeared on ebay but dropped an order of magnitude to $50 after just a few months.

The diodes are made for a video projector.
