It has been fun trying to meld fabric and electronics. They go together just like oil and water:)

It's for partying and dancing, and I have to tell you: Any fast song with a good beat and these are simply the coolest thing ever.

Thank you Tuh0z! I know around here any laser under 40mw is often considered a child's toy, but I really like these. The dots swarm organically, and tend to dance to the music as if they all have their own personalities. During that process they sometimes flash across someone's eyes. I wouldn't want to be using any laser that is bright enough to be dangerous for that.

Thank you for asking Ghostchrome. This project is actually several years in the making :) This is the third set that I have made, and a few of my friends have also made sets.

The problem with most sets is that with all that movement, dust, and weather the mean time between failure is about 6 hours. Of course, 6 hours is completely unacceptable for anything outside of a hobby project. This is the first model I have made that should be able to withstand normal use.

Now that I'm on a roll I want to make more!

Wow Infinitus, you're good! For this prototype I ended up using 10mw unfiltered units. I am just about to get the parts to build more sets and they will genuinely be 5mw and IR filtered. I am hoping and expecting that they will appear almost as bright.

Yeah, I plan to get some good video on Halloween. Hopefully I can post some clips.

They will, however, be ready in plenty of time for Burning Man next year. I am hoping to have 10 sets and call them "one thousand points of light."

You're the first person to catch that as well Infinitus.

The new 5mw filtered green units appear brighter than the 10mw unfiltered units! :D I tested the current draw and they actually use slightly more power too. I guess that just goes to show that more than half of the output of an unfiltered green laser is in infrared.

Interesting that the filtered units have a higher draw and look brighter... interesting and cool:)

Normally I'm not really a fan of IR filtering since no matter how good it will still impact 532nm transmission, and I'm very paranoid about where I point my lasers (although sometimes I don't look it:p) but for an application like this, where you might well catch someone in the eye, I think it's definitely a good idea.

Now about the whole thousand lights thing... have two words for you... diffraction caps!

With then you can also get away with using more powerful modules too:eg:

How much are you selling these sets for btw? Someone I know might be interested in one:p

Seriously though, the development of the prototype has cost me thousands.. and I still have more development to do. I'm pretty much out of money at this point, but I plan to start a Kickstarter project soon to help me finish.

Hmm.. those pics don't tell the whole story, do they? Here are some details:

Low self discharge NiMh battery packs. Military grade plugs... and on the side of the gloves near the thumb I have wired a reed switch with a magnet in the thumb, so when you touch your thumb to the side of your hand the lasers all turn off until you move your thumb away.

I really want to use 3d printing to make a custom harness for the diodes that will seat them firmly and comfortably to your fingers. Who knows when I'll be able to get that together though.

The reed switch is a very nice touch... though I must say I'm surprised at the thousands...

I figured on a price of about $300-$500, though in a much much simpler version.

Well, there are a couple of models for those who like it cheap:

Cheap gloves.
Even cheaper gloves.

These things are basically glued together, the lasers sit on the back of your fingers, and of course.. cheap red lasers.

The ones I'm building have an MSRP of $899. They are worth every penny.

I do plan on offering a 10% discount, maybe a little more, to Kickstarter backers once that starts. (If it starts.)

Those diffraction caps look interesting.. I wonder how I could get them to fit cleanly on the modules I have. Thanks for the tip, I'll definitely have to look in to it.

Maybe I'll see you at Burning Man :D
