I have some Energizer batteries, Ultimate Lithiums, and they are being used in my >150mW green laser from Optotronics and I have been using this laser regularly and I just tested the voltage on the batts....they are still at 1.7v! Talk about capacity, wow. I thought about getting some eneloop or hybrid rechargeable batteries for their capacity but why since the lithiums are so good. I have been using lithiums for a long time but I have never tested the voltage after extended use. The laser is still lighting matches and smoking leather....photos of that coming soon.

my 100mw from optotronics came with an important notice not to use lithiums due to their excessive voltage. Did yours not come with that notice?

Hi, Yes it did and I contacted Jack abouy them and this is what he had to say about the batteries:

"You should be fine with the energizer advanced lithium1.7v batteries,
I've used them before, I thought they were only 1.6v; you just want to
be sure not to use anything more powerful than those."

AND:

I mentioned I bought some of the new "yellow" stripped Lithiums and they measured 1.8v each and I mentioned to Jack that I would have to return them because of the high voltage, his reply:

"Hi Todd,
No need to return them, just put them into another device for 20-30
seconds and the voltage will drop down to a reasonable 1.7v."

Just make sure 1.8v is not used. 1.6~1.7v is ok. Anyway are you enjoying your 100mW? At what output did Jack test it at?

I have another +150mW coming today that tested at 167mW with regular alkalines and I should get over 170mW with my lithiums at 1.6~1.7v.

lithium is a completely different chemistry altogether. Alkalines go through a voltameter will show differences between charge, thats because OCV drops linearly with remaining capacity. Lithiums on the other hand OCV is independent of remaining capacity. So Lithium primaries such as the CR123A start at OCV 3V and end their life at OCV 3V. Testing voltage without applied load is useless for lithiums, thought you should know ;)

Yeah i knew that a volt meter would not test the load, I figured you all did too. Thanks for the info.

Hey there!

I am looking for some well performing AAA batteries for my pointer. I think you are speaking about those http://www.akkushop.de/energizer-l92-lithium-battery-aaa-15-volt-1250mah-p-3709.html?language=en ? The "Advanced" ones with yellow stripe don't seem to be available in germany yet, can't find them :( But I think there shouldn't really be a noticeable difference?
Also, the sheet tells they come with 1.5v, but yours had 1.7v?

greetings

Hey, Yeah those are the ones. However the power output of these batteries right out of the package is usually 1.8v and I have seen one at 1.9v! WOW! Some lasers can't handle that much power so make sure if you get them, put them in another device for about 30-40 seconds to bring the voltage down to 1.7v and the laser will perform well for a long time.

Just asking myself why the datasheet aswell as the package says that both, ultimate and advanced energizer lithiums are coming with 1.5v. Nevertheless at least using the advanced ones directly out of the box without bringing their voltage down a bit would damage the opto pen? :undecided:

Yeah, here is what Jack had to say about it.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"The energizer lithiums will work fine as long they say on the package
that they are rated at 1.6v or less each. The 3v litihum cells are
what you do not want to use, they'll fry it big time."

"I just read your post and pictures on the LPF.
You should be fine with the energizer advanced lithium1.7v batteries,
I've used them before, I thought they were only 1.6v; you just want to
be sure not to use anything more powerful than those."

So....1.8v is too high, it will lessen the life of the diode or cause slow or immediate damage to it.

They're also rechargeable... with diminished capacity of course. But still higher capacity than regular alkalines for the first few charges.

Quick question... What kind of batteries can I use straight out of the package? No voltmeter to test. :(

Either Duracell ultras or rechargeables and also any other alkaline battery will be fine. Duracell Ultras have 1.6v so they are good.

I never trust lithiums with lasers or flashlights... They killed my 15mW in a few weeks. :(
