About how long did it take to get them after the tracking said they left Hong Kong ?

Since you had them for about 6 months now, do they still work as well as when you first got them ?

Here is a "spec-poll" for those who have an LED Shoppe 50mw Green Laser Pointer where they can vote on the "spec-level" of the one(s) they own: http://laserpointerforums.com/f52/spec-poll-ledshoppe-50mw-green-laser-pointer-57153.html

I remember getting a couple from LEDShoppe a while back. If I remember, one was around 45mW and the other about 49mW. I would suspect they don't do a lot of QC with these lasers and it's kind of a "luck of the draw" thing. Still, they [probably] are better than most of the =< 5mWs you's find on ebay, masquerading as a 50 or 100mW.

Has anyone ever had to return a defective laser to LED Shoppe in order to get a replacement, and if so, did they reimburse your return shipping cost, and if so was it reimbursed very quickly, and by PayPal or store credit ?

I sent them an email saying mine was underspec-- hoping what sandidgepatrick says is true and I can just get a replacement tossed in with another order. Those UV-LED/white LED/red laser pointers do look cool-ish, and I wouldn't mind getting several of them.

Please let me know what they reply, thanks !

(those UV lights do seem neat, but whether I order from them again depends on how they handle customer support in getting me a good laser or not)

Heya.
I recently bought a pointer advertised as 50mW from LEDshoppe. My excitement was enormous-- I was mainly planning to use this for sky pointing, and was expecting a highly visible beam not only at night but at dusk as well as indoors in moderate lighting. However, I am pretty dissapointed. From other people's reviews of the pointer, I was expecting a power somewhere between 35 and 80 mW. If I read right, a power of >35mW would be visible in a moderately light room and should punch through black trash bags.

Even after allowing the pointer to warm up a bit, and using fresh eneloops, the beam is totally drowned out if I turn on any lights in my apartment. I can see a dim beam outdoors, but even shining near a full moon washes out the beam. The laser didn't have a hope of poking a hole through a black garbage bag. Holding the dot against a steady point on my hand didn't even feel warm, and was bright though not dazzling. From those observations and reading around, it seems likely that this greenie is throwing maybe 10-15 mW of light, much less than I had planned for. Additionally, the shipping took a week longer than I estimated. LEDshoppe, I am disappoint.

Would it be worthwhile to contact them to see if I can get a refund/replacement? Somehow, I suspect being on the other side of the planet will make customer service a bit awkward.
Apart from fresh batteries and warming the laser up, are there other things I can do to get nearer the rated power output?

I hope I don't have to buy another pointer to compensate for the failings of this one; I'd rather spend my meagre undergrad budget on collecting more wavelengths. Advice?

if its really as underspec as u say it is try potmodding it SLIGHTLY and i cant stress that enough, a little can go a long way, just know that u will be reducing the life of the laser but if its as cheap as ur making it sound its no real loss

As a laser noob I have never tried pot-modding myself, but from some of the posts I have read on the forum it seems there are some who recommend against it.

I guess an important deciding factor is a combination of how much you paid for the laser as well as how tight of a budget you are on.

If you are on a tight budget then breaking a $25 laser might hurt a bit :undecided:

If you have lots of extra cash for hobby stuff, and it's just a cheap $8.00 laser then it probally would not be a big deal.

trust me im tight with my wallet but i took circuit measurements when i pot modded my laser pointer and only upped the current by around 10-20mA its all a matter of not getting carried away also keep in mind your laser is probably not IR filtered so extra precautions should be taken into consideration while using your laser

I understand what you're saying as far not turning it up too high, my other concern is how I have read where some have broken their lasers simply trying to take them apart to get to where they can turn it up some.

As easy as some say it is to pot-mod, how high are the chances of breaking it while trying to do so ?

it just depends if u have the proper tools if u have some sort of clamp and the proper pliers and take it slow and just slightly wiggle parts till they start to slide apart, i watched as my friend tried to hammer the module and driver out of a blue laser pointer then laughed when it all broke, u just have to go slow and use care and dont get cocky

An update on my looooooong process of trying to get what I paid for from LED Shoppe.

They sent a reply a week ago (Nov 4th) where they said:

"That's fine. Sorry for the defective item. We will send you replacement asap and we will test it before we ship. Thanks for your patience and understanding.
Yours, LED Shoppe"

.......but it's now been a week later and still no reply with a new tracking number even though I emailed them a few times for it.

Hopefully they will honor what they said and follow thru and the delay is just them being slow.

(I am keeping a close eye on the 45 day limit to get a refund from PayPal so if I do not get a good replacement as promised before then I will have no choice but to enter a dispute to protect myself)

......has anyone had LED Shoppe NOT follow thru with sending a good replacement for a defective laser ?

If so, did you do a PayPal or credit card dispute and get a refund ?

(hopefully it won't come to that, I would much prefer they send a good replacement, then I would give them a good review for the good one)

When I contacted them, I got the same standard "return for a replacement." It just didn't seem worth it to me, so I kept the pointer.
