Default Laser Dazzler 500mw greenie for cops and military

http://www.laserdazzler.net/index.htm 8-)
Why do they need a laser reticle scope when using diffused laser light. I guess if it has a trigger and is pointed at the "perp" then it must have a scope!

with the 20 meter minimum engagement distance, you would need the scope so as not to engage someone accidentally

"Ongoing eye examinations continue to demonstrate no eye damage from repeated direct exposures of the CHP at and beyond the minimum 20-meter stand off distance."
http://www.laserdazzler.net/laser_flashlight.htm
This demonstration seems to imply that it will be used in situations where the stand off distance is a bit shy of the required 20 meters. *:-? ... and something tells me that the average officer isn't going to limit exposure to 0.25 seconds either. *:

With that kind of exposure what might the long term effect be on ones eyesight?

I guess being blind and then having the snot kicked out of you is far better than a cop just dumping 16 rounds into your face and chest...

If something is going to go wrong, it's going to go wrong fairly soon. A child will not suddenly be stricken with blindness 40 years after he stares into the sun.

If by long term you mean repeated exposure - that doesn't really matter. Most people don't have that many confrontations with police.

Either way, it makes more sense to just use a spotlight. It's cheaper, safer, easier to use, and possibly more effective.

^ agreed

I really dont see the point behind this, whats wrong with mace, tasers, pepper spray, etc.....I think this is a bit crazy to stun or temporarily blind someone in a confrontation. I think its a very very expensive solution to a simple thing.

I can't see a "perp" *that has been shot in the face with a Laser Dazzler..
to just keep looking into it with his eyes wide open... that's not a natural
reaction...

For example.. if you get a bright reflection of the sun in your eye... the natural
reaction is to shut your eyes as a Blink Reaction.

The purpose of the Dazzler...as I can see it... is to disorient the "perp" *long
enough... so that he can be subdued....

What better (non-Lethal) way to get control of a "perp" without Chemicals or
shooting an extremely High Voltage through his body... than to remove his
ability to see his surroundings because he has his eyes closed...

Just my $0.02... 8-)

I wrote the man who invented/manufactures the "dazzler". This is a response to my emails about the cost, etc.

Craig,
The CHP sells for $9250 to the military. It has four lasers that produce the 500mW. This gives a significant advantage which allows use at much closer ranges since the power from only one laser will impinges on the eye at close range.

There are plenty of things wrong with non-lethal weapons really. Police use them as convenience devices, tasering someone is just easier than even talking to someone for half a minute, so it becomes the preferred means of doing something. If they shoot someone there is paperwork, hospitals, good chance of claims for damages and such, but with these things its just blasting away at people, guilty or not. I'm very sorry to see lasers employed for this purpose, and glad they arent likely to make it here.

$9k seems pretty expensive for basically an RPL, beam expander and some timing circuitry, but you can sell anything to the goverment and ridiculous prices given enough connections.

Also, i very seriously doubt this could be effective -and- safe at the same time. If you want to incapacitate a person with bright light, you'll need more than is safe for the eye... someone can easily continue to function while his eyes are being damaged. This point is easily proven by people burning their retinas out while casually chatting about how pretty that solar eclipse looks...

What these were meant for was to stop cars at checkpoints. Apparently some of the Iraqis were not stopping for some reason, daydreaming, thinking of that new camel or blackmarket M-4 and getting killed for just being at the wrong place. This way they could get an innocent person to stop.

Hmm.. and you need to blast them in the face with a half watt laser to do so? I'm sure these things are more likely to find us police application that military use.

For slowing cars, 2 speedbumps seem an effective solution... if a sleep, the first one will whack your head to the car ceiling, waking you in time to break for the second ;p

0.25 seconds is the time the blink reflex takes. For 5mW lasers, the maximum safe exposure time is 0.25 seconds, which is why that's the legal limit for import without safety features.

The "dazzler" is four 125mw lasers each with its own divergence/expander lens. These are further pulsed. This is so one eye will not get more than 125mw at any one time. And the light the eye receives will be yet a fraction of that 125mw being it is not a focused beam.
It's a great invention and I for one am trying to figure out how to modify my PRL-450 to be like one. I have a carry permit but I would rather pull my 450.

I am working on attaching my RPL-165 with 10x attachment to my H&K MP5SDA3 (photo attached). The RPL is capable of being a good defensive tool as well as a sight. A lot of things sold to the military are grossly over priced and over engineered. Having worked with the military for many years, they like simple and inexpensive solutions. I am sure many of you on this forum could come up with something just as effective and far less costly than the Dazzler.

From my experience, the 10X may be overkill. You will get the most bang for your buck with the 3X. Assuming you are talking about an expander.

You need a big expander if you want something that is eye safe at close range, but still packs about the same punch say 100 meters away. One advantage of starting with a fat beam is that the power density is relatively low even at point blank range, possible such that is under 5 mW for the pupil area.

If it were to put out 500 mW, a beam of 100 cm2 would be a safe start - and with the divergence after such an expander, i'm sure it will be very effective at longer ranges as well (provided you are able to aim).

Pulsed operation would probably help to increase the startling effect (a strobe in your face is worse than a light of the same average output). I think it would not be very hard to modify any green laser into doing this - though i am not totally sure the pump diode and crystal set will handle rapid pulsing that well... though they seem to be up for the task in lasershows and such.
