Default laser damage

hello everyone,

I'm new to this forum not because i love lasers haha, but because some irresponsible *enter curseword in your native language here* decided it would be funny to shoot a green laser at random people's eyes. I was walking home one day when i saw something green and didn't really pay attention to it and the next thing I knew.. WHAM.. it felt like getting hit by a green truck (in the eye). It felt like I got hit for a long time, but it was probably under a second. He shot it from the other side of the street so I guess it was a strong one.
After that my head started to hurt so bad that I went to the hospital (emergency room since it was nighttime). And after they put some ointment in my eye (to prevent dry eyes) they told me to come back tomorrow to see the specialist.
He checked out my eyes with the magnifying thingie and a bright light that felt like the sun and said he could not see any damage. He said I kind of dodged a bullet since the laser hit me at an angle it "missed" the important part of my retina.
My vision was blurry for a couple of days and I couldn't stand daylight or my computer screen, so it was a boring time.

After that I thought I had healed but then came the aftermath. My eyes became extremely irritated and after a day I figured it was probably because they became really dry. I had problems with everything, reading, watching, eye movement hurt, even blinking. I couldn't stand daylight so I had to stay home for a while.
I bought some eyedrops and they have been improving steadily. I think its been 3 weeks or so and my eyes still hurt if I use them too much and also when I forget to use my eyedrops. I don't have as many headaches anymore. I just wish the specialist warned me against dry eyes so that I could have prevented them.

That was my story, sorry if it was long and boring.

Does anybody know how long it will take for my eyes to heal, have similar experiences or advice?

Thanks so much!

I'm sorry that you've had such a bad experience with lasers, that guy's an idiot.

You can read about a guy who got hit in the eye with a 1W laser, HERE.

My deepest condolences and prayer for a speedy recovery.
The person who did this to you; should be arrested, In my state it is against the law to shine a laser at another person. Try to stay out of bright light or wear sunglasses and you should be ok. I destroyed the center of my right eye in an accident with a knife and I know what your going through with regards to bright lights.

Welcome to the forum, and sorry of your bad adventure. Well fortunately the speciallist told you that there was no damage. If the pain continues and your eye doesn't heal I would go and consult another doctor and be sure that you have no damage. I don't know what was shined at you but it had to be very powerfull green. Fortunately green is the most visible color so your reaction even if you might have felt it like a hole second, was probably much less than that.

I hope you get better and you recover yourself soon...
best to you.

I wish you the best of luck, and a quick recovery.

That said, it doesn't sound like damage from a laser.

Most likely as a result of the laser hit, you rubbed your eyes too much, and experienced complications because of that, as well as a psychosomatic reaction.

Check also that you are not allergic, and if you aren't just keep using natural lubricating eye drops.

Probably because they are the strongest portable lasers in the world? Lol ...well might not be the strongest but sure is enough to blind someone.

In any case just imagine what kind of damage could someone do with a IR laser... They shine it at your eyes and you don't even see it comming.

Actually you'll know someone's shining an IR laser at your eye when you here a "pop!" And your eyeball fries. But seriously I think IR will do that.

Someone shined a 5mW pretty much directly into my eye once about a second and a half.. no problems

Is that an fair price? I'm just starting up with selling lasers and want to get involved in the community.

Sorry to hear you had a negative experience with lasers! I hope everything turns out fine.

Also laserbud, they are probably 100mW (if that) not 1000mW because a 500mW green laser module is $250-$300 (closer to the $300 side). Learn up on lasers and know what your selling, buyers from here (laser enthusiasts) will appreciate if you know what you know your stuff.

Thank you, I do want to be honest.. obviously my supplier isn't. They are powerful units but I do agree with it not being 1000mW.

A Laser output meter is very expensive. If it burns things, would it be fair to advertise it as 100mW?

You shouldn't really supply your lasers from a place that doesn't test their lasers with an LPM, otherwise you'll get a lot of angry customers who have LPMs that test that their lasers are underspec. LPMs are not too expensive, you can get a Bluefan Basic LPM for about $110
