Kryton Green Mod - Not Bad!

Using the Kryton version 1 barrel, it was easy to build a green mod without any modifications to the barrel... (except one very small thing)

The green modules are here for the specs on them:
50mW: http://www.o-like.com/b2b_cpinfo.asp?id=882
100mW: http://www.o-like.com/b2b_cpinfo.asp?id=909

No, they are not IR filtered, but for the price of these modules, I'm not complaining!

This is the only modification that I did to the barrel... I just drilled it out 'a tad' here, in order for the module to be able to slide through...

The key to this build, making it a simple and well built mod, is this custom little heatsink which also allows you to adjust the position of the module length in the tube...

I have this set up for using a single 3.6 volt RCR123 battery (or 3.0 volt). But if I wanted to, it would be easy to slightly bore out the barrel to fit a 17670, or an 18650. And then mount the module from the front. (Kryton Groove is already fit for an 18650)

What a great design these barrels are from Kenom!

Improtant: You must 'handle with care' at this power. It can damage the eye instantly with a direct shot. Proper eye protection is recommended.

These 50mW and 100mW Standstone11 green modules are not IR filtered. But I have some IR filters, and the difference in the measurement is only about 10mW's or less with the IR filter (50mW module). And about 20mW's or less with the 100mW module.

These modules don't seem to have that 'slow climb' in power like the cheap DX greenies, the 50mW ones start out, at or above 40mW's and climb to over 50mW's with in 10 seconds in normal room temperature! The 100mW modules are overpowered as well!

That looks quite nice!

One thing: how did you deal with the polarity issue? As red diodes usually have their case negative, but ir pump diodes are usually case-positive, did you reverse the batteries or something?

Yes! Good question, I should have mentioned that... The battery is positioned 'case positive'. (positive end toward the switch) ;)

The spring length is 'clipped' and adjusted for the needed contact width and pressure...

Makes me want to try out some of her more powerful ones!

Same for me iam that happy with the 40-50mw green modules that i cant resist to order a 300mw.
Its on the way now.
btw verynice looking greenie

For the Voltage, i cant agree that the module dont getting warm.
I use a CR123a and fully charged at 4,2 volt the module is getting warm very fast.
To avoid damage to the driver i use Heat glue to glue a smd Heatsink on the parts wich are getting warm.
I have to sand it down befor i glue it, to fit with the same diameter the module has.

best regards

Hahahaha sweet.  I was wondering when someone was going to mod one of these like this.  I've been contemplating doing it myself but didn't have a spare green module.  Excellent job Jay!!!

So you didn't modify the head any at all?

Thanks Ken! No, the head is not modified. This is actually more desirable (to me anyway), because it still gives options for changes to be made with this excellent host! ;)

If I were to slightly bore out the tube for a 17670, or an 18650, then the head would have to be modified to fit this module, because it would have to be mounted more forward, to make room for the longer battery...
Jay

P.S. I've got a 120mW module on the way for the next one...

Am I the only one noticing what's horribly wrong with this thread? ::)

Are you talking about it's location? I wasn't sure if it should be in the Tutorial section, or the Modifications section... It could go in the Buy, sell, Trade section as well I guess... :) Green came to mind, because I haven't seen a green Kryton before!

I'm guessing the suggestion of buying her higher-powered pointers, which ended in complete disaster for Electron...

Actually, it ended with Electron getting his money back. From what I read, and my communication with Susie, there are different quality modules she sells. Some are not IR filtered, and those are cheaper. She also sells high quality modules that are IR filtered. I have a 200mW one on the way to me so that I can test it. The one Electron tried, was not a higher quality IR filtered module...

I sure wish it would fit into your barrel! But I know it will not. Perhaps the tube can be used as the battery supply end of the build, but a larger head would have to be made to fit the module and put a nice heatsink on it.

I asked Susie about the cost of a host, and since it was only $53 dollars more, I am trying out the complete build for $301 shipped. (no battery or charger included)

If this is the quality IR filtered specs that she is promising, then it is well worth the money in my opinion. We shall soon see!
Jay

P.S. She said that normally, you have to order at least 3 for this pricing, but she would let me get a single order so that I can first test it. I will be testing it with, and without an additional IR filter.

Here's another host they have, but I like the 1st (RPL style) host much better...

Yeah... I like the host in the 1st picture I showed, looks just like the RPL style...

DX doesn't say much about the specs either. Susie is promising a high quality IR filtered module. Hope she comes through!
