Just received my first true pointer - Optotronics 30mW

After reading so many good things about Optotronics and their great customer service reputation and solid lasers I decided to order one myself. I went with the "30mW" Green Premium Pen and just received it today. All I can say is WOW! For such an insignificant power compared to what you can go all the way up to I am extremely satisfied with how bright and magnificent the beam and dot is. This is my first true laser pointer and couldn't be happier. I put 30mW in quotes because it was overspecced at 37mW as noted on the insert I received with the laser. It feels very nicely made and the only rattling is of course, the button, which doesn't at all bother me. I have a feeling this should definitely keep me satisfied for a while and will more than likely be purchasing more down the road. Thanks for looking!

Sorry, that's not a true pointer. It's a Class 3b laser module in a "pointer" form factor. A "pointer" is a laser that is a Class 3a/r or less laser, which makes it blink-reflex "safe." That is squarely in Class 3b land, at over 6x the maximum power that would make it Class 3a/r (< 5mW), making it a "laser module."

I would not use that laser for any typical "pointing" purposes (e.g. presentations) because it is dangerous, but it may be nice for star-pointing.

Unless your pointing purposes include pointing out people's irises, it's safe to use as a pointer. 100mW greenie can be used in a presentation.

Diffuse reflections are NOT dangerous.

Anyhow, on topic, maaan I really wanted an Opto laser. This seems like an awesome unit.

You should look into using rechargeable batteries. Swapping out non-rechargeables is a major pain, and expensive.

That's cool dude! My lower power green has a visible beam but nothing that awesome. (coming from someone who has not seen many lasers before). 30mW sounds like fun though. I'd use a 30mW as a star pointer if decided to buy one. In my area, there is no flight paths close to our location but there are planes in the distance that can be seen at night sometimes. Almost pointed my laser at them twice now thinking they were stars being so far away. (Look at star before you point laser at it. Might be plane lol)

Hey there! Relatively knew to the laser community and found Optotronics a while back. Done hours of research, comparing them with other companies and i think now is my time to buy. Im going for the 100mw Premium with Special effects caps. Any thoughts? comments? Warnings?
and may i ask about how long it took for the laser to get to you after you ordered it?

I've had mine for 2yrs. now, but when I ordered mine, it shipped out within 1 day or so of receiving payment.
They are in the U.S., so if you got your payment in today, you would probably have it by the end of the week. :D

BTW - If you have any questions, Jack at Optotronics is great to deal with; and he answers his mail almost immediately.

Interesting fact but I don't think the audience would enjoy the very bright diffuse reflection though, and it would likely have a negative effect on your presentation rather than assisting.

In a normal well lit classroom (likes of which I'm spending great deals of time in), <5mW class pointers are on the edge of "invisible" and cannot be practically used.

The diffuse reflection would not by any means be "very bright", just normally visible.

If you were to use 100mW green pointer in a dark and small classroom, it ma be a bit distracting, but in any normal conditions, it's perfectly fine.

Hi Eudaimonium thanks for the input,

I wonder why that doesn't match my experience? I can clearly see a 5mW 532nm dot on white paper in bright sun light from 4 meters away. My 50mW 520nm is unpleasantly bright to look at in the same situation. At our works it's not uncommon to have people less than 4 meters from the presenting wall. I wonder what environmental factors we have different.

That's weird, I am having much trouble seeing lasers in bright sun light (and even more so with low power ones).

In any event, if the people are only 4 meters away from what you're pointing out, then yeah 100mW is a bit too much, especially for people who are not used to seeing high powered lasers.

Optotronics ships 2 day priority so its about 3 days from ordering, but on my first order with my luck optotronics is located in CO and they had a huge storm so it was delayed but only took I think 6 days but thats because 1 of the days fell on the sunday so I got on monday. I will say Jack gave me updates.
