ok so this is my first post on this site.. im not new to forums at all though :p

so i got a green laser a while ago, just a non focusable 5mw green laser
but ever since ive had it, me and many friends would like one that can burn things.. and i dont just mean point blank match sparks. i would really like one that could light a cigarette with ease and cut black tape or plastic.. from a fair distance

i dont mind building one or buying one but im at a loss of what specifically to get and where to get it from.. so maybe some of you laser heads could help me out

i dont really have a budget but i would like to keep things kinda cheep i dont want to be spending more than 150$ after that the price outweighs the coolness

anyway hello laser forum, ill probably be here a lot now

You are probably better with a different color than green for the money you want to spend.

Maybe a 405nm or a 445nm. Both are blueISH. You can get a much higher power 445nm that might do what you want.

But you NEED to have eye protection and be very careful with lasers at those powers. Otherwise you and your friends will go blind very quickly!

^^ yes you must have protection goggles, well yobresal sells 1.3watt (i think) blue lasers and bhwollen was selling some before but im not sure if hes still selling them,

you can also pm DTR and ask him how much he will take to make you a 1+ watt laser

Or you can go DIY and build your own :D

I think you'll find that for what you want it's not really gonna fit into your budget. For burning 445nm (blue) 1W+ laser is best option. Cheapest I've seen on here for sale was $120.

Problem is with safety, if you want to burn anything, you're gonna need to have goggles to protect yourself and anyone you want to show this to.

Strictly for burning it might be cheaper to go with a 650/660nm red laser, but you're not gonna see much of a beam. You can get a 250mW Cutie red laser from o-like and a few goggles for that spectrum for under $150. But again... red = not much of a beam.

For pointing I would suggest starting with 30mW greenie.

Trust me on this, cool factor wears of really fast when you tell people that they have to put on goggles.

If you want to read a couple of good threads about building lasers, take a look at the INDEX
thread in my signature.

driver, diode, batteries, and module will build a basic laser. once that is aquired you can either go with a pointer style(host+heatsink combo) or a lab style. you can buy lab style heatsinks or make your own from old pc heatsinks.

when bying your diode/driver.. make sure the driver your buying is capable of being used with the diode you are buying as in 405-445 diodes. higher powered diodes will need more current and voltage.

it is easier to buy one but building one can be fun and educational. its your choice. make sure you invest in safety glasses/goggles either way.
