I bought a cheap green laser from QQ-Tech and I'd like to open up the host. The host looks like this

When I turn the laser on, it does nothing, I have to cuddle it and warm it up before it will produce a green dot, after it warms up and produces the dot, it will only do so for a short while, then it gets dim and will only produce a dim red light inside the host until I let it rest a while..

I tested the batteries with my multimeter and they are fully charged, good on both volts and amps, they also work great in my 405nm and 650nm

I'd like to pot mod this to a lower power to see if it comes on any better, and then a higher power if not.

can anyone suggest a way to open this host? (safely, no saws or sledge hammers) :thanks:

Don't look into the aperture (output) of any green laser, or for that matter, any laser at all, working or not! That "dim red light" is from the infrared (IR) laser inside the green, and the fact that you can see it at all means it is pretty strong because your eyes don't see infrared very well. In general, IR is dangerous because your eyes can't see it very well (you won't blink), but can still be damaged by it like any other laser. So don't look into your lasers!

As for your laser, if your laser isn't performing well now, it's not going to perform any better pot-modded. Also, if that's the same QQ-Tech laser you bought before, it is more than likely already overspec, like most green lasers you'll encounter (especially the ones with pattern caps).

You should just buy a better, higher powered laser, but more important, you should buy some goggles, and make sure you never look in the aperture of your laser again!

This is great advice, thank you, but I never looked into the aperature to see there is red light inside, I can see the red glow reflecting off the inside of the aperature from the side. I would never look directly into the aperature of any laser, even <5mw (Even if I had safety goggles on)

Put the laser in a microwave oven 10 minutes , then it should work better

I tried this, now it fires beams of microwave! I just used it to make my coffee hot again. :na:

These don't have pots by the way there current is set by resistors. Also you have to destroy it to open it and by doing so you won't be able to use the kaleidoscope tip any longer. http://laserpointerforums.com/f45/ebay-532nm-guidesman-build-78790.html here is what the module looks like.

You're definitely right about these being over-spec, Thanks for the pics, I really like your build. Are the diodes in these things useful if salvaged? I wonder could they be used on a different, better, more powerful driver? :thanks:

Mine was acting funny and it was do the cheaper batteries, I also found using a small neodymium magnet between the aaa's helped and a little piece aluminum in the tip where the positive slides in. after harvesting the module I was about to power it from one 25500 in the guidesman and it performs very well now.
