Hi Matt, Odicforce is probably the best, most reliable supplier of DIY/Hobbyist laser stuff in the UK Home - OdicForce Lasers Online Shop

If you want a more professional setup then Stan @ Laserwave uk is your man Laserwave UK - for all your lasershow hardware

As far as importing lasers is concerned, there are no laws regulating them so you can buy what you want, you may get stung for import tax but most far eastern (China etc) will mark your package as low value item and you should be ok.

I have bought a few items from o-like, rayfoss, laserland and dealextreme. My favourite is o-like for their green modules.

Be aware that shipping from the far east can sometimes take upto a month!

Any further questions ask away.

I would start with a green of around 10mW, you wont be dissapointed.
Postage charges are reasonable and they combine postage so when you order a few bits the postage stays relatively low.

class 3b and 3A etc means and what does IR mean aswell

Come on matt, get ya google search working!

IR= infra red

ok i am probably only going to buy 1 though so are you sure 10mw is ok? and not a 20mw for the exact same price? i mean im only gonna shine it at the sky at night ( not at planes) and at far away objects.

Or is 20mw rlly damaging to the eye if it accidently reflects off something?

Also does looking at the dot of a green laser 10mw+ damage the naked eye?

Depends on several factors, but the best thing to do is play it safe.

you say 10mw+ That is a broad definition of power, a 10 megawatt laser could be labeled at 10mw+ since the "plus" could be anything.

Also looking at the dot?? are you planning to stare at point blank range??

or 100 yards away??

Hey I'm from the UK and I'll cover a few brief things.

Law:

UK and most of Europe now decided on class 2 (<1mW) for general use and presentation laser pointers.

There aren't actually any specific laws regarding lasers in the UK, however the Health and safety regulation says that anything used within the view of the public must be Class 2.

However, the Trading standards have been urged to use their power to remove laser pointers over 1mW from the general market under General product safety regulations 2005.

This basically means, don't go out on the street waving your pointer around stupidly, keep it in your private house, and don't draw any unwanted attention.

Importing:

I personally often order from O-like.com, and have never experienced any issues with customs, obviously you may run some bad luck but it is VERY unlikely, and while I don't endorse this sellers will often label your package *Light pen* or something similar to avoid attention, and also don't have your laser shipped with batteries so customs won't have anyways of testing the laser.

Susie over at O-like is a great seller, and will obviously do her best to make sure your laser arrives safely, and confirms the output of all her lasers.

Purchasing:

Your best bet is too check out some members on the forum, there are some really great sellers that will personally hand build any laser you wish in any host for great prices, plus you have instant personal assistance if anything goes wrong, along as support with your laser.

Check out:

Daguin
Flaminpyro
igorT

They're just a few of the top of my head, they're are plenty more.

Safety:

Don't skimp on this section, order goggles suitable for your laser when you order your laser.

Personally, for general point with my 150mW o-like green, I don't wear goggles but I'm very careful of reflections and watch out for shiny surfaces and glass, for burning I ALWAYS wear my goggles, specular reflections from staring at the dot close up can may not do permanent damage, but it certainly won't do you any good.

Hope this helps a little :)

Also postage from China can take anywhere upto 2-4 weeks, postage from members in the USA, are normally shipped next or within a few days and I often receive things in under 2-3 weeks.
