Hey guys, new to the forum here and have recently developed an interest in laser pointers. I have a few low powered lasers that I use from time to time but just bought my first high powered laser. The specs say that it is 1000mw and includes instructions on how to light matches and burn things. The only problem is, it produces absolutely no heat and the laser itself doesn't even heat up even after several minutes of continuous use. I've tried focusing the beam and varying the focal points but it just doesn't seem to work. The laser I purchased is identical to the one in this video, same model number and everything, but his is easily able to burn things. Anybody have any thoughts?? Thanks!

Probably around 50mw, and I doubt it's IR filtered. Check out the BST section and JetLasers :)
Its not very correct to judge a laser's power by what it can burn- a 35mw laser can burn if focused correctly.

I have seen videos of much lower powered lasers burning. I was just confused as to why an identical laser as mine was igniting almost immediately and mine doesn't heat up whatsoever. Just figured one labeled at 1w would have an easier time. Thanks!

Fair enough. One more question, is it normal for lasers to be this misrepresented in their specs? I'm an EE student and plan on building my own from now on but it would be nice to know

If you start reading you soon realize that a 1w green laser usually costs from $1000 up to various thousand.
I don't think your laser is anywhere near that power, maybe 1/10 of that if you are lucky.

First of all, 1W of green laser light should be blindingly bright to even look at the dot. It would be rare to find a green 1W laser for less than $700

Depending on who is selling a laser it can be on spec( meat the declared specks) or not. Usually unknown sellers are always under spec.

Yeah, it's pretty normal with sellers who aren't reputable. Theres hundreds of threads about which companies are reputable, so if you want verified output, I'd check that. Also: Lazerer.com

Good info, thanks guys. Luckily, I didn't spend very much at all and now I have a fun toy (yet still dangerous). Time to start building

HI! And welcome to the forum!
Make sure you introduce yourself in the newbies section and read all the laser safety threads and always remember to read the stickies and use the search button if you have any questions.. 90% of questions have been asked many times before and there is a massive wealth of information on this site!

Also, if you are buying from most Chinese sites it is quite regular for the power outputs to be grossly over rated!!

Again, Welcome and GOOD LUCK with your FIRST BUILD!!! :yh:
