Got my X175 today...

i stick to a 30second duty cycle on my x150 just to be safe

Actualy all x lasers use a 500mw diode, so im sure that they would have the exact same runtime, the good thing about the higher powered ones is that the battery will last just as long as like an x50

My X105 peaks at 120.5 and averages at 118.6mW... 1.9mW difference!!! ;D
But try it with Lithium batteries... And remember the X150 & X175 models have a shorter duty cycle... I think it's actually recommended 30 seconds on and 10 off...

Yeah duty cycle is the same 100 seconds on, 10 seconds off, i think you remembered 30 seconds from when nova posted here saying that they changed the testing of their lasers to one 60 second test on the models up to the x125 instead of taking the median average and peak of three 20 second tests. On the x150 and x175 however they acquire the average and peak from one 30 second period. Keep in mind that these are recommended duty cycles so you shouldn't worry to much about it, however that doesn't mean you should keep them on for ten minutes at a time ;D. You're likely to naturally keep your laser within the recommended duty cycle as most burning jobs shouldn't take more than a few seconds to accomplish. Man i am itching to get my x125 back :'(

Well it depends on how you look at it. I don't do much tape cutting anyway, I prefer burning holes in leaves and wood. It's more impressive.

And I guess the 100 second duty cycle is fine then... My mistake.
But cbrian is right... most burning tricks, especially with 178mW, shouldn't take more than a few seconds anyway.

First off, I would like to say Congratulations on your new laser! I was thinking about buying that same one, but I am in the process of saving for an RPL-165 (can't wait to share with every one when I get it).

Second, you are already a "True laser freak"! Spending that kind of money on a laser makes you an elite laser freak, if you ask me! Besides, I've already built two CW 405 blu-rays w/ the 9v & 100ohm resistor and Aixiz housing for $130 total (including shipping). I've never had a problem with that build, and so after 3 months, they still work great. I love the color too.

Anyway, back to the Nova, how’s the divergence and the beam quality? How warm does the laser itself get? Batteries? - You should keep up with us as time goes on with your experiences with it.

They are very accurate, I believe Kenom sent one to Pseudonomen137 for review, and he was quite happy with it. I've got one coming to me pretty soon, I'll post a review with pictures and such when I get it.

The burning process is instantaneous. It's just the part where I want to cut the tape off cleanly that takes a bit.

Anyways, I'm getting a perfect TEM00 right now. The beam itself is visible even with sunlight, and is clearly visible indoors. I can't really say anything about the heat buildup and the battery usage of the pointer, since I don't turn it on for more than about ten seconds at a time (With the only exception being the time where I've tried to cut the tape) and changed the batteries only once since I've gotten it, but it stays cool. The beam itself, on the other hand, stings like hell. I've suckered my friends into putting their hands out, and now they refuse to do it. ;D

I'd love to take a picture of this thing in action at night, but my camera sucks.

The most important thing about a laser for me is the divergence and the mode shift.
Does it have mode shift while cold or is is just have a weaker beam?

I can't really give you an accurate comment on divergence because, you know, my eyes don't come with 10x zoom standard.

But, in my opinion, (you can take it with a grain of salt) the divergence appears to be tiny. I haven't seen the beam spread out for quite a distance. (I've even burnt holes through black trash bag from 15 feet away.)

Anyways, there's no mode shifting or dimming, even with some difference in temperature. I've taken this thing out for fun when it was snowing a week ago in NY, then brought it back inside and I didn't notice any changes.

If you can burn holes through a black trash bag from 15 feet (4,57cm) it has a very good divergence.
Maybe you can pop balloons from 6meters (19,7feet)
Besides measuring the divergence with the conventinal methods (this gives out different results for everone as there is no standard) I prefer to determine a divergence standard for myself.
My standard for a good pensized laser is that : I should see the dot on a building 1Km ( 0,62mile ) away from me! Sure when there is no fog. Fog eliminates your view of dot on a building
I think this distance is enough to point out something with a laser ;D

Bad news, folks. It looks like the diode inside my X175 has misaligned itself. I have no idea how, as this thing hasn't been dropped or experienced shocks, but the beam itself is off-center, and the front cap is slightly obscuring the beam, which is causing distortions. I can clearly see the beam is off-center when I take the cap off. It's not mode shifting or anything -- the beam still retains its perfect TEM00 state.

I've e-mailed NOVAlasers to see if I can get this thing fixed or replaced. I'll post more as soon as I get a reply from them.

I've gotten very attached to this thing over the 12 days, too... :'(

I think this is not a big problem. Keep it.
Haven't you noticed this since you've received it?
If you have a laser and happy with it do not examine far because everyone can find a problem in their laser
IMO keep that beautiful laser

Kenom's meters are nigh on dead accurate as they are Coherent at heart and all analog internally so they are about as accurate as you can get.

Dang that sucks. It seems like there's been a lot of problems with the X-series lately. Mine is being repaired right now.
