Hello guys,

I just got my very first laser and it is just a 5mW laser from ebay just to try out whether I like it etc.

But when I tried it, I see quite a big beam while after reading a lot on this forum I thought 5mW didn't have a very big beam. Is this one very overspec?

Yes it is most likely overspec. How overspec exactly, you would only be able to tell with an LPM. I have a green that has good divergence and does around 40mW with fresh batteries, and the module came from a cheap ebay laser.

It's all luck. Especially since I ordered 2 other greens with that good one, and one was half dead and the other mode hopped and then died as well. Good one is still going great.

If you REALLY want help and answers to your questions you really should add your location to your personal profile page- by doing that- you just might get a PM from a LPM owner willing to meter your new laser-- its not maniditory but IMO it should be-- laws are different everywhere-- so if we have no clue where you are do not expect many to offer help-- lots has been posted on what to expect these days from Ebay lasers-- their 'no HH lasers over 5 mW' rule has really changed things -- so to avoid getting their listing pulled the simply say the pointers they are selling are 5mW-- there are hundreds of sellers but AFAIK only a few BIG places where all pointers are made--
before the ban these were 'binned' - the best were sold for more and the lowest were sold a 5 mW but now that has changed-- they do NOT 'make' 10mw- 20mW -30mW etc green pen pointers-- they meter them and THEN they become the higher powered and lower ones-- -- I have a +5 rep bump for you AFTER you add your true location

BTW
(untrue/ false info in anyone's profile will cause a perma ban when that is found out)--
UNDER 18?

yeah that sucks

BUT it WILL will pass- lie about this and you will have a hard time staying a member of this forum-- read the LPF Terms of Service-- add your date of birth in your profile-- we will send you birthday cards-- and best wishes-
-if you say you are 18 when you are 16 you will be possibly be trading 2 years of membership for a life-time AFTER you turn 18--

----------- DLotus has it right- if you want a nice RGV '5mW' trio (3 lasers for 12$-free ship) - in reality all three could add up to > 250mW-- but if you win several auctions you have a much better chance of always having at least one each working RG or V--

here are 4$ ebay pens with nature's fogBRB with pics)

you may as well try to win auctions for more as its very common for one to arrive DOA or have a short life (especially if to run it TOO long w/o a cool-down cycle)- your should NEVER be ran for much more than 2 min--
