I just recently bought this: TRUE 50mW Green Laser Pointer Pen $20.55 Free Shipping

I'm sure it isn't really 50mw, i wasn't expecting it to be at that price, but the thing is, i colored a paper towel black with a sharpie, and it didn't even smoke. If it means anything I'm still using the batteries it came with (I don't have any AAAs atm, but i will get some) but shouldn't it at least smoke? I also tried it on the black foam that it was packaged in, and it produced the same results.

the odds are it is 50mw. it could be higher or lower. that isn't a crazy cheap price for it. 50mw isn't a crazy burner. i had a 96mw greenie that never made stuff smoke.

either way, 50mw isn't a burner unless you have an adjustable lens

What exactly is an adjustable lens, and where could I get one, or would it have to be built in?

greens are tricky... if you don't have one you it is almost impossible to add one. only until recently have greens been available with adjustable lens.

so if you cant turn the tip and see the beam change size, then you do not have one. and the current lens is glued in place.

good luck,

michael.

Not *quite* true.

No you cannot adjust the laser's focal point BUT you can adjust the focal point of the beam once it exits the aperture. Literally all you have to do is shine it through any convex optical lens. Any magnifying glass will work. I have some that are about 1" wide that I have used to easily get a 50mW 405nm to burn many materials. If you want one PM me and I can send you one.

It is normal if your 50mw pen style will not burn. As chipdouglas mentioned you need to focus the beam to make it burn. Normally you need at least 100mw in order to make a pen style burn.

I just burned my table testing out the lens I am sending Mr Popo using a 52mW 405nm. It doesnt burn a lot but when you focus it two a pinpoint it will sting your skin, smoke black plastic and burn through paper at a close distance ~ 1".

A 50mW will burn using an external lens.
