Default Decided to build a green DPSS

So I have it in mind to turn my ex governement laser into a green DPSS unit. (Some might have seen the unit in the Multi-media section.)

This does assume that the output is 808nm and I know what assuming can do but what the hell... A goal's a goal. If it's not 808 then I will change the pump diodes but, for now, we will all pretend that they ARE and go from there.

The bits of kit I have already:

The unit.
Some cavity mirrors and an OC from a Heruurscience Surprise box, (not all known but pretty sure they will be useable as some are coated and labelled. I'll update with pics of these soon).
Various collimating optics.

The bit on the way:

(This crystal was pointed out by another member but no bids were placed and I waited till the last second so hope I haven't just put my foot in it. Personal apology if I have.)

These are really early stages so this may take a while to complete, (sorry, WILL take a while...).

To the questions...

My first concerns the beam shape. I've read enough to know that an ideal focus is to have the beam waist inside the crystal. What in your collective opinions would be the best way to go about this? In the attached pic you can see the shape of the beam at the moment. Would you attempt to modify the current shape with an add-on or start right back at the diode? Currently the beam exits the unit at about 5x1mm. After approximately a foot, the beam is 10mm wide, (just thought I'd mix it up in the unit department!).

I want to take this project one step at a time. I know I have things to learn and want to learn them. In the end though it would be a group build and, as the build will progress step-by-step it could be a nice demonstration model for the forum. What do you think? This is a big bite but I reckon I can chew it.

Let posting begin...

Default

btw, nice lens

I would use a simple IR diode, the gov laser looks too fancy for a simple DPSS.
Also in case you don't know yet, nd:yvo4 and ktp's from china are quite cheap, and I'm not talking about the small power composite ones.

Nd:YVO4 0.5% 3x3x5mm HR@1064&532,HT@808 AR@1064&532nm
Unit Price:US$80/pc for 1pc
KTP2305 3x3x5mm SHG@1064nm DBAR-coating
Unit Price:US$70/pc for 1pc
Lenses R=-100mm Dia.10x2mm HR@1064&HT532nm AR@532nm
Unit Prioce:US$30/pc for 1pc

This is what I have been quoted. The advantage for the crystal on eBay is that is already mounted...but you don't know doping % and the coating types.
