is there anything particularly "old" about these lasers ? what exactly is cni referring to, is it the type of diode or the casing?  im in the market with around 225$ish  and ive read the review section quite thoroughly but i cant make my mind up. Im not sure if sticking to pointer style (novalasers etc) or a little bigger (dealextreme 200mw) but use more expensive rarer batteries. btw what is the battery life on those cr123a's and the 18xxx ones compared to aaa ?

Re: cmi lasers

You probably mean CNI.It's a chinese manufacturer(Changchun New Industries) that make pretty good lasers, but ,inevitably, also make bad ones.Good resellers like Novalasers and Laserglow test their CNI's to make sure you only get the good ones.Other resellers, like Techlasers, just sell you what they get without testing it , so you may end up with one of the good ones, or with one of the bad ones.

As for the batteries , when it comes to lasers, I think everyone prefers lithium rechargeables to standard AA and AAAs.Especially since rechargeable batteries are just better than primaries since lasers eat them really quickly, and the rechargeable AA/AAAs mostly come in NiMH form that don't offer the full power of alkalines or lithiums.

well what about e2 lithiums? im just worried that some day those types of bigger batteries wont be around anymore/much more expensive. couldnt I get the rechargeable aaa types from energizer as well? Im down to either the "200mW Flashlight-Style Green Laser (18650 Battery Included)" or an X100 from novalasers. Is it safe to say these rarer type of batteries will last a bit longer in existence?

The "rare" batteries are not really a problem, because they are rechargable, and come cheap from DX with free shipping.
The ones the big 200mW laser uses have a big capacity, and should last for a while even with the powerfull pump diode inside..

CNI lasers (Nova, LG..) are regulated. And very well at that! I just tested one of their drivers, and it is amazing! The power of the laser will not be better with higher voltage batteries. The power will always be the max possible (depending on heat), as long as the batteries are above a certain minimum voltage.

I use 1000mAh AAA Ni-MHs in my >150mW CNI, and it works great. I have two pairs, so i recharge one, while using the other.

Lithiums might keep it in regulation a bit longer, but as soon as they would be half empty, the power would start droping, rendering them useless. It's just too expensive. Whenever possible, go with rechargables. Cheap DX lasers do not have regulation, and there the power really does depend on the battery voltage.
