Can someone help me regarding safe use of my green laser pen?

So I just bought (4) 5mw green pen from DX and I've been doing a lot of research on it. Apparently DX pens have a possibility of sending pens that are over 5mw so now I have some safety concerns since there isnt an IR filter.

I'm a responsible adult so expect no mishandling of these lasers from me but I have concerns on the potential safety issues of IR. Should I be showing any concern for this? Getting protective lenses is not really an option, but I can get IR filters for the pens. The only issue is that I can't seem to find where to buy them. Can anyone help me?

Also, I plan on using all 4 lasers at the same time. How would this effect IR emissions and/or the potential dangers of IR? My purpose is not to boost the laser or anything like that, but rather I'm using them for orientation purposes. I plan on mounting these lasers on an object in a square formation so I can see, at what angle the object is being held, or if it is being tilted, etc.

Thanks.

The IR leak from 5mW rated pens is generaly not considered dangerous UNLESS you point the laser in your face directly, which is given the circumstances of laser usage, not likely.

You should not stare at the lasers in reverse angle (looking in their output lens) in ANY case, and you should be fine.

You seem to know how dangerous lasers are, but IR leakage will not blind everybody in immediate sorroundings if pointed at white paper or anything like that. It should never be given the opportunity to enter your eyes directly, and that is about it.

However, you might want to note that DX lasers and similar el-cheapo products are not perfect in any way, meaning your rarely be able to use them for precise laser alligment, they tend to emit the beam at an angle from the main body, also could mode-hop if they are used with drained batteries, or if it is very cold outside and similar circuimstances.

For precise laser alligment, you should bu high quality lasers from companies like
Aixiz.com
Laserglow.com

Or similar CNI product distributor.

Hope I helped!

It would be a good Idea to get some appropriate Laser Safety Goggles
if you can't test your Laser's actual output power...
It doesn't hurt to be safe....

Since the Ban to ship >5mW lasers to the USA by companies like
DX... we have received 5mW lasers with powers much greater than 5mW...
I would imagine that it is the only way they can get rid of >5mW Lasers in
the US marketplace..

It costs just as much to produce a 5mW Laser as a 50mW Laser...

Goggles arent really an option for me. I'd much rather get filters, even if it is more expensive, but I dont know where to buy them. Do you know where to buy them?

Well, you can put a thread on BUY/SELL/TRADE section...

And by the way,

i have an ebay pen rated 5mW and its putting out 20mW, that can be an issue with these cheap 5mWs, ppl think its safe, because its 'only' 5mW not realizing there staring down a 20+mW beam

Well if they are stupid to stare into ANY laser, then thats their problem:whistle:
I can sell IR filters. I can post an auction on ebay if you want... I only have 4 more filters. I can order more but that might take some time. I can sell you 1 filter that is cut into 4 pieces if you want. The filters are 14mmX14mmX1mm. If you want, i can cut it onto 7X7X1mm squares but i might smear a little fingerprint or something on it, but you can wipe it off with a cloth or something. If you also need help taking off the tip of the laser, i can help you with that.

indeed it is, though id like to try and help prevent someone from doing it, was ment more as a phrase, though there are ppl stupid enough to do it, way back in elementry school i remember a kid shining 2mW red directly in his eye(trying to be cool i guess, didnt know the risk) my point was you have to be extra carefull with those 5mWs even using around the house, a 5mW reflection prob wont to 'too' much harm, but a 20mW would, the only way to be sure would be to test it on an LPM

Pardon me if you already know this---your lasers will not last too long if you do not use a safe duty/rest cycle.

Also I have never seen a green laser that was 'eye safe'. why are safety goggles 'not an option' for you??.:undecided: Lots of posts here about eye injuries and damage.(do a search)--oh yeah--WELCOME--HZ

IR is not a problem at this powers. And if your purpose is to look at the beam outside, you don't need goggles. IMO, you're fine already. It's ok to be responsible, but don't jump into the "paranoid" zone ;)
