A guy at work got a green laser about a year ago from china but soon after it stopped working as the switch had packed in. H brought it in the other day and we tried to remove the diode from the case but he got a bit heavy handed and knocked a piece of the end which had a rectangle optic in it. He also pulled one of the pins on the pcb. Anyway I took it home and removed the switch and just wire linked it and re soldered the leg back the the pcb. We stuck the bit that fell of on temp with a tiny bit of glue but nothing seems to be hppening.
Im guessing that the bit that fell of is the part that changes ir to green so did not want to run it with out in on.

From pictues i've seen on the web there is a ir diode, then a crystal then somthing called ktp. but this one had what looks like two diode bits stuck to the case, each with a wire and at 90 degrees to each other. the bit that fell off went inline with one of these. Is this normal?

Is this just dead?
Thanks
Lee

Unless you're extremely handy with small pieces-parts, consider this laser toast. A DPSS cavity is a very precisely aligned system... If the KTP fell off, it is a safe bet that with conventional tools, you will not be able to realign it yourself. I have tried, and its extremely difficult with conventional means. Not to mention if you knocked it around and it fell, you have probably damaged the coatings on the KTP (since it probably hit the floor or some other hard surface). Sorry my friend, but consider yourself partially lucky, as you can collect the optics and have a pieces-parts bin full of DPSS goodies for any projects you want to try. Be careful with that infrared light. lol!

I'd be very surprised if that laser didn't have a composite crystal. He just broke the crystal set from the pump diode. Easy to get back, but glue at the wrong place means the whole laser is ruined. Some alignment of the pump diode and crystal set is needed too, so unless you're lucky you glued it wrong.
Pictures would be helpfull, it's a bit guessing what happened.

That is one nice close up of the diode, very clear and crisp, sorry for the random off topic-ness.

Your determination is commendable.
Your picture taking is also something worth noting.
I think the educational aspects of what you are doing is great but in all likelihood you won't get the unit working even close to it's original capacity. But don't stop trying...if you get anything out of it a few pictures of that would be fantastic. Few people manage to re-tune the optics of a DPSS !
While you are working on it you might order something new as consolation. Members here have many parts/pieces available for building all kinds of units that won't need the finese adjusting that the DPSS will.

I have kinda come to the same conclusion that its dead but its worth a try. What is a composite crystal? From looking at the diode im not sure how this thing works.

Out of istrest were is best to look for a high power green or blue/violet diode. I've just got this thing to get more of them and this is next on the list. I have a 20mw green and loads of red including a mains and battery powered HeNe tube at a massive 2mw :)

my 50mw green laser pointer stopped working after I added more AAA batteries to it

but it did work when more batteries where added but as soon as I put 2 AA batteries back into it , it just stopped working

Please don't tell me The Diode in my laser has blown Because that's the last thing I want to hear

Sounds like a few dead batteries to me.

You're digging up an old thread btw

Thats because when I start a new thread it takes forever for someone to post anything(well at least it does happen on "SevenForums.com" the website where computer issues are discussed)

You necro posted twice in the same thread

You have no room to complain about slow replies, it took you 7 months to reply to his post! I expect to hear back from you sometime in 2013 :p

Anyway I am a Newbie to both laser pointers and forums however I will start a new thread explaining the full story of the issue although I would like some quick ideas of whats happening to may laser

btw: I did try new Duracell Ultra AAA Batteries but had no luck.
