I am thinking it has a dirty or scratched lens.  I have tried using compressed air to clean the lens, no dice.  I haven't had it for very long and I haven't put anything down the aperature that would scratch the lens.  It is still under the three month warranty, should I send it back to Nova and get them to fix it?  What else could I try that might fix it.

Looks like dirty lens, I use lens cleaner cloth, and lens cleaner solution I bought from Rite Aid for about $3 total.

Do you mean like lens cleaner for glasses, or camera lenses, or do they sell it specifically for lasers? I guess a lens is a lens is a lens though.

I have some glasses lens cleaner and one of the microfiber cloths they give you when you buy your glasses, will they work?

Plus I'm not sure how to access the lens on the alpha models. It looks like you can take the top off right below the shutter control but I couldn't get it to turn and I don't want to mess something up by forcing it off.

I use Q-tips and window cleaner so your lens solution should be ok.
Just don't use any strong solvents; it may remove the AR coating on the lens.
Check if the lens is scratched or smudged. If it isn't you may have some dust that settled on an internal lens or the IR filter. If that is the case, it is fixable, but since it is under warranty it may just be better to send it back.

I cleaned mine with a dry microfiber coth after maxkillz showed me how to take the cap off. I had to use pliers to loosen it. Now it's clean :)
