Never heard of Laserland for the cheaper lasers. The big three have always been O-Like, LEDShoppe and Rayfoss. Has anyone heard about Laserland. Also, I'd be interested to hear about others' take on those violet/blue pen lasers. They seem really cheap

laserlands has been mentioned here and there, they seem to have decent pointers. id recommend the 100mW version, and as far as the back open/middle, that just means that the laser unscrews in the middle of the pen, or on the end cap(back) that is the only difference, so that part is up to you, and buy saftey glasses as well.

buy energizer e2 lithiums, they last literally almost forever, or eneloop rechargeables. the lasers will be a little underspec, so at 100mW you should have at least 70mW, and it will be super bright with the star cap on. you can start lower if you want, but you'll end up buying a stronger one anyways.
