600mw green - ripped off heavy.

Hi all,
Greetings from South Africa.

I recently purchased a 600mw green focusable torch style for around 80$ from a local classifieds.
It was shipped from his city to mine, which was the first vital mistake I made because of course I could not check it out. Although I am a total laser noob I certainly I knew it would be underspec but figured even 200mw at that price was not to be missed so I took it. Naughty me :tsk:

I am now sitting hanging my head with regret for being so ignorant. (Is even that the right word?!)

1) The laser is about as strong as my 100mw greenie both with fully charged batteries, which in itself is prob underspec.
2) The divergence is awful compared to my 100 green. although it is focusable the dot just does not seem to get small enough to make a decent beam. (Think the entire lens distance was miscalculated?)
3) There seems to be a lot of power lost in the fact that about 30% of the light is not focused into the dot but rather a mess around it. Tried cleaning the lens, still just as bad. I have deduced that this is an unusual amount as I have my 100mw to compare it to.

I was planning to return it immediately but I saw that it seems to be very similar (identical) looking to the Rafoss model which people say isn't TOO underspec (see pic below).
So now I have to ask - Am I making some complete idiot of a mistake or is there really nothing I can do?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

ps- i thought it looked hollow in this pic. if it does, it isn't. If you have no idea why I would think it looks hollow I apologize!

Cheerio :yh:

A good quality green laser should have minimum 1$ per 1mW. Anything below is not good.
This rule still stands today.

Mmm sounds like an immediate return to me. Thing is, it was already second hand so I thought I had hit the jackpot with someone selling it for way under what they bought it for. Oh well.
This forum has been incredible. Thanks very much guys. :)

Now that I no longer own a decent laser, I am looking for a bright beam and was tossing up a 300mw green vs. Yob's 1.1 but I'm gonna go with Yob if I can scratch up the cash. Also nice to support the forum members.

Would you guys reccomend Yob's as the best price for a high powered laser regarding the BEAM ONLY? Otherwise I guess o-like for a 200-300 greenie. But I now have a bit of reason to doubt their specs and quality considering some of the reviews.

Optotronics and Jetlaser are good companies.

Yobresal 1-1.4W is a blue 445nm laser. It is a good laser for burning if you want a complete laser.
The best laser is the one you build. If you have soldering skills.

Ya, there are exceptions....with Group Buys for one thing...my Titanium 150mW Lite A from Jetlasers peaks at 261mW. I bought it for 220. Just keep an eye out for good deals, and good companies, cuz better companies will have better actual power:rated power.

Wow didn't see those kits before Just searched them.

I'd be worried about messing things up. I would have to adjust the power depending on the strength of my diode?

Most kits have a hot option. The driver can be pre-set if you want. You just need to buy a laserdiode and popp it in.

I would just buy a Yobresal 445nm. They are excellent, cheap builds and they look much brighter than a greenie at the same price.

Of course they can be built for much cheaper, but with a pre-built kit you need not worry about breaking it in the process of building, which can be really expensive and demotivating. If you have never built before you should start with cheaper diodes and kits.

MY Dos Centavos
If my colllection went missing(say stolen) and I was starting over with what I know now. This is what I would do if wanted the basic four (R_G_B_V) ++

FIRST GET GOOD EYE PROTECTION FOR ALL YOUR WAVELENGTHS!!

This is assuming you want your set somewhat matching and were not bent upon little pen lasers and did not care to DIY.
There sevearl good guys out there but IMHO Luke (yobresal) makes very nice 445s($200).
For the Br($200) I would buy an extracted 12X (small extra fee) from UK Morgan, a flexdrive from Dr Lava(Andrew), a copper host from Moh(Matt) and find a Vet willing to assemble for a reasonable fee.
For the 532nm and 650nm I would try to get in on a JETLASERS GB-- thier 150mW Greens($220-$250) (PL-C or Ti) and the Red($220) PL-C 200mW (+or-)are nicely overspec and well built- with incredible support and warranty. ( I am admittedly biased on JETLASERS (Gray) as I have done two GBs and JETL he's been very kind to both myself and MANY here at LPF with samples and support way over and beyond what we expect from China laser makers.
Get a nice lockable carry case and cut black foam to hold all four and be done with it.
I think all this with the needed extras would come in at around $1000. You would have dependble handhelds all with decent duty/rest cycling.
HOPE THIS HELPS

Sorry for the double post--I am making a new thread usindg the above. hk
