Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but you cannot pot mod a 5mW laser into a burning laser. This video will explain it all. (Not really, but it's funny.)

These are fake. Maybe you would be able to up the power a good bit...for all of 30 seconds. Then the diode would die. Sorry. If you want a good laser, you will have to pay for a good laser. The ones on ebay that claim to be more than 10mW, by the way, are almost definitely not. And anything 100mW or more is absolutely, no doubt, fake. I would recommend buying a green laser from ebay seller "salostore" as he is the cheapest, and I am satisfied with my laser. They all seem to be the same. But remember, you get what you pay for, and don't expect to be getting a "burning beast" out of something you can buy for 12 bucks. If it were really that easy, Novalasers, Dragonlasers, etc. would all go out of business. Sorry.

Oh, you don't want 5mW? I have a 5mW, you can see the beam a little bit at night, and it is fairly bright. I recommended the seller because he is the cheapest seller for 5mW I have found. Unfortunately, burning green lasers start at around 75mW, and they can be somewhat expensive. Also, you will need goggles for anything above 30mW. Novalasers is probably the best and most reliable supplier, as their units are overpowered and they also always have an IR filter. Novalasers is regarded as one of the most reliable laser sellers here. Do NOT buy from Wickedlasers.

Well, I guess that depends on your meaning of the word "crazy", because 50mW of green can and does burn, but is kinda limited to how well and how quick it burns. 100mW would be better for burning, obviously because of the power increase, but still, isn't "crazy", well in my definition... [smiley=evil.gif] BUT, nothing is going to be "cheap" unless you live out of the US or have connections getting the DX cheap ($ and quality, meaning they don't usually last) lasers, but, if you're serious about investing in a nice laser that will last, burn most black objects, sting skin, pop balloons, light matches, then the Nova x-75 (mine adverages 94mW) is probably perfect for you. Just be very carefull, don't get in trouble with the public/authorities, and it's a damn good idea to get safety glasses if you plan on staring at the dot for longer then a split second, especially if you plan on doing full duty cycle burning!

Try www.laserglow.com
Their 5mW Lyra lasers seem pretty nice.
The Galileo is also a very good laser.
All their products look nice, are high quality, and are FDA approved.

They also have great customer service.

And by the way, there is no real visible difference between a 3mW laser and a 5mW laser, so the Lyra 3 is basically the same as the Lyra 5, just cheaper.

With 5mW you'll be able to see the beam at night and in low lighted rooms and the dot is far brighter than any cheap 5mW red.

Forget the ebay junk. If you want a laser, you might as well get a nice one that will last.

If you want a burning laser, get red. If you want nice laser for fun, get 5mW green off http://www.dealextreme.com/search.dx/search.5mW%20laser
Remember that DX won't ship anything over 5mW to USA. But other web sites will, since their lasers have safety features. You will need to research.
Hope it helped in your decision.

They already did. Thats why they all look the same (thanks dave). The lasers are tested and the
ones with more power cost more. Thats why the pot mod ALMOST always won't work.

Pot modding used to be popular, and used to work. Back in the day, companies would make green lasers, adjust the pot until it put out 5mW, and then sell it as 5mW. You could then go in, re-adjust it to its real max output, and it would be more than 5mW. Now, companies make the lasers, turn them all up to their maximum output and sell them as that, because they figured out they could sell a 30mW or a 50mW for more money than the same thing turned down to 5mW. So now, instead of the lasers being turned down, they are all sold as already pot-modded, because they're already at their max power. If you buy a 5mW, it's because the max it could do is 5mW, if it could do more, they would have sold it as more.

So it used to work, but doesn't nowadays. If you still want to try, (maybe you think the factory that made the thing didn't do it right? Doubt it though), just take it apart and turn the pot on the driver until it breaks, or maybe gets brighter if you're lucky. Or, you can go buy a more powerful pointer. So the process is to take it apart, and turn the potentiometer until it gets brighter (or, more likely, breaks).
