Is there anyone around that sells 5mw pointer modules, aside from fleabay? I'm looking at making a led/laser EDC. I could harvest one from a pointer, but I figured I could find a decent quality module (O-Like or similar) on here somewhere. Also, if I got a 30mw module, would I need safety glasses for that level, I've always heard anything over 5mw?

What does EDC stand for in your project?

You could try getting one from Lazerer.

Goggles? Yes you should especially if you can't guarantee exposure will be very low (such as something spreading out the beam at all times, or it'll be projected onto a matte surface at all times). If you're incorporating the laser into a project I would definitely get some so you can do your testing without having to worry about the beam all the time.

@BB: I'm not 100% sure, but I think in this context EDC is Every Day Carry. I saw that reference on some other flashlight site and had to look it up:)

Lazerer, O-like, or Laserlands (Green 532~550nm - Laser Diode Module) sell green modules. I've heard good things about Laserlands lately and they have low mW modules... but all of these are in China. Laserlands sell through "fleabay" too, but you save a couple $ ordering from their site directly.

If you're in a rush, AixiZ (http://www.mfgcn.com/) has then at higher $. I think they are in TX.

Just my $.02

Yes, edc stands for every day carry. I'm currently working in maintenance, where we're pointing out parts on a machine or robot behind guards. So it is very nice to have a flashlight and pointer combo at hand all the time.

Most of these parts are going to be metal of various finishes, no matte surfaces to be seen.

What I was thinking of was a side by side with something along the lines of a cree xml with one inch reflector, and the pressed module beside it. I'm thinking a tv remote shape made from a single piece of aluminum stock. So that the housing and heatsink for both the led and ld module are shared full body length. We have a unit where we can make custom o rings for machines, so I can make a seal for the top plate, very similar to a small remote control. They will have to have seperate drivers, just for the current, but I'm still looking around to decide on a 3way switch, or just individual buttons. Battery will be shared between the two. Most likely this will be one or two rcr123a batteries.

Also, with a greenie this low power, is an IR filter worth the effort, or will the modules already have it.

BTW, I already have several led lights, and a wicked core. I'm just tinking it'd be nice to only have to carry one thing that I could slip in my pocket or a holster.

If I get time, I'll sketch something in cad or solidworks too illustrate what I'm talking about.
