Unfortunately, you would need a LOT more power for a beam to be visible with a viewing angle of ~90 degrees in excess of 100 feet from the beam source.
The spot will be clearly visible if pointed on tree tops or hills, though, and over more than several hundred feet. If used this way, it may be effective as a signaling device, but it will not work as you described.
In low humidity, a 50mW green laser's beam will be visible up to about 40 feet away from the source- give or take a few.
Thank you for your quick replies! We were looking at 50mw because of the economic of that size. I like the idea of "lighting up" high objects and I think we will experiment with that idea. We know the eye danger of them and will be very careful.
Flare guns are fine, but a laser pen is so much smaller. Besides, what's cooler then having a laser in your pocket!
And you wouldn't want the flare gun going of in your pants!
