I never liked it, but that's just me. It looks like it should be a part of something, and not a whole unit.

Really? I have one, and I must say it's terrific, I just can't belive O-like made this with such high quality! The whole laser is perfectly alligned in a spectacular way, and also, I don't have a Lpm, but if I were to guess, I think the one I got is overspec

I've been working on a ray gun prop, and that would look great at the end of the barrel, but $90+ is just too much for a prop.

I think it should be made a bit thinner and a bit longer. Maybe include an 18650 battery to fit in the extra space and maybe shrink the outer bars down closer to the main tube.

if it was thinner, then the heatsink would be horrible, but once you hold it in your hand, you can feel the work put into it. The heat sink in host of the Gatlin is very good, I can see the duty cycle easily going 2 and a half minutes, with 30 seconds intervals.

Is it uncommon for the host itself to be the heat-sink?

No. Some lasers have a host that the diode is pressed into directly. Some have modules, but they mostly all use the body of the laser for additional heat sinking.

Is it uncommon for the host itself to be the heat-sink?... Because that thing looks like it would be a pretty good heat-sink. And if it's an issue of the metal used for the heat-sink vs. the host, why not make the host a more conductible metal and chrome it or something. (Leme know if I'm way out on a limb here because I have no idea what I'm talking about...)

Yes you have no idea what your talking about...

So then if you wanted to maintain the current duty cycle then you take out the current heat sink and use the host instead while possibly changing the host's material to better suit the role.

I was mostly talking about the physical appearance thought rather than the feasibility.

-CAM

why in the world would the physical appearance be more important than the heatsink? Without a proper heatsink your laser won't even work.

Sure. Do a search for Kryton.

It's an all-aluminium, custom-milled host. There are pictures and details on here, as well as findable through Google.
