Hi all, I am new to this forum, and to lasers in general.
I recently purchased a 200mW green laser diode + driver from Deal Extreme (200mW 532nm Green Laser Module (3V 11.9mm) - Free Shipping - DealExtreme), with the hope of building a burning laser pen.

I initially hooked up the laser to two 1.5v AA batteries, but found that the laser was very dim. The beam was invisible in unnatural light.
I then read that the laser required 6v, so i got a small 6v battery (Black Diamond - 6V Battery For Ion Headlamp) and tried it out (what I'm doing as I write this). To my dismay the beam is still totally invisible and does not even feel warm.

I've been browsing this site the past few days, and have heard a lot about this product not being the specified mW.

Is this why it isn't visible, and is unable to burn?

Do I need a different battery?

This video was my inspiration. It made making a burning laser seem much easier than I am finding it to be.

Hope someone can help!

Thanks!

One thing is you could of got a bad module.. it happens some times.. another thing is you may not have high enough milliamps to drive it just because the battery is 6v does not mean it has the right amount of milliamps to drive the driver to power the laser. One thing is get a two AA battery box with leads a set of double alligator clips and hook it up to the laser module and with a ceramic philips screw driver turn the pot on it the pot could be not set right that is all i can come up with

These are designed to run at around 3.2V, and no more than 4.2V (single 18650). 6V will burn it out if it
can deliver the current. If it's that dim with 2 fresh AA batteries, then it's just an underperformer. It's a bit
of a crap shoot with these things. Some will be above rating and some below. It could just be that you
ended up with with a low output.
