Ok, i'm looking to spend around $150 on a green laser that i will use only once every few months while away camping to point out stars in the night sky, with all the talk of shabby websites selling "weaker than labeled" products and not being very well clued up as most of you guys would be... advice is certainly needed.

Whats the most powerful with the best collimation/thinnest beam i'm likely to find for what i'm willing to pay?

Will maybe increase price a little for good reason.

Hope you guys can help me out here :)

Hi Fenzir, Thanks for your reply.

I didn't link to anything before i was just commenting on that guys post, i suppose i could stretch it to around that price and it looks like a really nice laser... I do realize that 5mws can be sufficient for what i'm wanting one for, although it would be nice to splash out on something abit more impressive.

Oh, sorry to throw you infront of the train there, I got you two mixed up.
If you're looking for a nice laser for $150, this will probably do you well.
200mW transformable green laser/adjustable [OLV6200] - $129.99 : Welcome to O-Like.com, Your source for laser products

o-like was a great company around here for a while, but they have been selling some bad units lately. Still, better than some of the chinese websites.

Although, if I were you, I would order that and this

5mw 2 in 1 Green Laser Pointer Visible Beam FastUSAShip | eBay

It was my first green laser, had it for almost a year now, never had any problems with it. Also comes with a default diffraction head. (it makes a lot of small green dots and you can spin it and it looks awesome)
However, I have not had a chance to check its power on a LPM Laser Power Meter.

Hi Paul,
Checkout my company Optotronics Laser Products
Read our reviews either on our site or search the web, you'll find great reviews and our great reputation.
We are not a drop shipper from china that sells everything under the sun.
Lasers and laser optics are our business and we stand behind what we sell.
Each laser is tested multiple times and the average output power is recorded on the instruction sheet. High beam quality with a nice thin beam having low divergence.
We're also located in the US, so it only takes 2-3 days to have the laser in your hand...faster if express shipping is used and everything is in stock.
In fact our latest batch of 100, 120 and 150mw premium pointers have higher than usual output by ~15 to 25mw.

I'll vouch for optotronis. By far some of the best customer support/service around. If your going to buy just one laser to use, and you want to spend a little extra for a quality product you wont be disappointed.

Optotronics is a great company selling some high quality lasers. However, unless you want a pen style--they are quite expensive.

I think the o-like 200mW could be a good bargain. I just got a rayfoss FLX 200mW and its pretty darn bright, has focusing and lens shade (rotate to close the "iris"). This model is exactly $150.

If this is what you truly want the laser for, than you want a laser under 30mW. The higher power lasers are to bright to do astronomy. Even a 5mW will be bright at night. With a high power laser you also run into a safety factor, because the laser can fry your, or your friends eyes before you can blink.

just buy a simple green pen for $10 on ebay, would most likely be sufficient for your need and also uses easy to get batteries.

You can always buy more expensive and better quality lasers, but since you just use it once in a while to point at stars i would recomend a cheap pointer.
also IF it breaks it wont hurt since you can easily buy a new one for cheap again:p

i personaly would go for either a simple green pen from a member here or a 5mW from ebay( these usually tend to be 15 to 30mW, no guaranty though )
