Is an X-Ray emitting laser pointer possible?

I was talking about Encap's mean reply to a question that was asked out of total curiosity of our technological abilities these days.

I was not being mean at all just responding to daydream/fantasy world/video game level question with a real world answer.

I did take the time give you a couple of interesting/useful links to have a look at just in case you were interested in something other than your own imaginings about the imaginary, so....

The point was, a simple Google search could have answered all your questions and more. None of us like to spoon feed information to people who just don't like to read. If you plan on being a contributing member here, you must ask intelligent questions. Not silly ones that a simple search would answer.

Exactly ---generally speaking, LPF is not about babysitting and spoon feeding people so lazy and clueless they can't be bothered to acquire enough information about the subject they are asking about to be able to ask an intelligent question.

Yes you were. Would you have said this in person to a friend? Hopefully not. Why not extend the same courtesy to a stranger as you would to a friend?

You guys will probably think I'm stupid and dangerous for asking this question, but would it be possible to have a handheld laser pointer that could fire a directed beam of x-rays. If so, could there possibly be a handheld gamma-ray laser pointer?

The Linac Coherent Light Source at SLAC is the world's most powerful X-ray laser.

X-ray laser require a LINAC ( a large linear accelerator) to create their pulses.
Not going to happen in a handheld device.

The way I see it, this classic quote comes to mind.

Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should. ~Jurassic Park

If building a handheld xaser was possible, it still would not be a good idea IMO.

No was not mean as explained.
My sense of humor is different from yours. Each of us is totally unique -- just like everyone else.
Experience has proven, to me at least, that the best way to illuminate the darkness is to make light of it.

In any case the OP called it at the outset--"You guys will probably think I'm stupid and dangerous for asking this question".
I was just agreeing with his assessment and moved forward with what I thought might be some helpful links pointing in the right direction.

Fortunately, I am not part of nor a believer in the "Facebook" delusion/disease that everyone posting for the first time somewhere on the internet is my "friend".

"In person" would depend upon the age of the person--a child or a mentally disabled person being different than normal adult.
Everyone who registers as member of LPF is supposed to be "the age of majority" 18 or thereabouts - a responsible adult capable of agreeing to the Terms Of Use, having the education of an adult, and capabilities of a "normal" adult. No reason to assume anything different.

What should I have said--maybe:

Here to put it nicely : X-ray laser is impossible in 2018

But... I’m only 16 and would love to contribute to hazardous things because those are the most fun, who doesn’t want to get killed by high voltage right?

There is an X-ray tube on eBay I’ve wanted to get for 400 dollars the size of a penny but much stronger than most tubes and it only outputs in one direction also making it “safe” for all babies out there, but also it could be put into a small host with a high voltage transformer inside (small of course) which could be a very unique “X-ray laser” if you would like to put it. But anyway don’t lettem put you down, go be dangerous and have fun!! If you die though I would like to have the X-ray tube hehe

I’m not here for a long time I’m here for a good time. Go do anything in the entire world that makes you happy, and if that means touching the positive of a 1500 volt capacitor at 420uF and grounding your hand to the case of a ruby laser(not a very pleasant feeling, surprised I didn’t die to be honest) then by all means you go right on ahead and do it. But hey that’s just how I live I’m not saying everyone has to ;) By the way homemade X-rays pics are awesome if anyone has tried it

You are saying that you are 16 years old and have intentionally exposed yourself to X-Rays for the fun of it? Someone needs to have a word with your parents or guardian.

Well they are the ones that told me I could. I don’t do it in crazy amounts, maybe the amount of time you would normally take a mouth or limb X-ray, just enough time to let the exposure of the camera capture the image on a phosphorus screen. And not all day everyday I’ve done it 5 times on my body but after that I just do random electronic components, I have lead shielding though normally when not exposing my body

And how do you know how much ionizing radiation you are exposing yourself to?
