Default Women and lasers, it's just me?

Why *almost* every woman are scared by burning lasers? Is there any explanation? Do you know any laserist woman?

Hey, no offence, I'm not being ***ist, just wondering why...

I personally never noticed any difference in how my friends reacted to my lasers. About the same amount of my male friends were hesitant of my lasers as the females and about the same amount of females really enjoyed using my lasers as the males. Maybe my set of friends was an exception? Doubt it though.

Default Re: Women and lasers, it's just me?

I think that women have more of an aversion to physical risk and dangerous technology than men... For example, how many of us guys have built an explosive device just because we could? Probably many, especially here on LPF. How many women do you know who thought that making thermite or nitrogen triiodide was a good idea in grade 10? Probably none, but I sure did.

I'm just saying that when a guy picks up a chainsaw, chances are he considers doing a hell of a lot of stupid, dangerous, awesome things with it besides simply cutting down a tree. A woman who picks up a chainsaw usually just cuts down the tree. I'm not saying one is better or worse, or that this is true in all cases, but this is the general gender bias towards risk.

Well when you do either of those, make sure to get them on video.

Default Re: Women and lasers, it's just me?

Well personally I've met many women that are very interested in lasers. I have given several speeches and done a couple demonstrations in the physics lab during college. I would say that just about an equal number of women to men would approach me after class for more information about lasers and laser related career fields. Most of the women were legitimately interested in the technology and operation of lasers but I did have one ask me if she could do hair removal with one of my lasers. As much as I wanted to trim here alleged bush , because she was a solid 8 (don't tell my wife), I had to inform her of the dangers and tell her it would be best for her to have that done by professional. Anyway, I think that if you can demonstrate the uses and awesome brilliance of a laser to a group of people, women are usually just as impressed as men.

Oh, popping matches and lighting balloons I've got to see that one!

Not talking about your students, studying mates, colleages, etc. Just think in a bunch of people that don't know about lasers like us, or have an special interest on them. Are women more skeptik/scared? I've seen my gf, my mom, female gender friends & family, and always men are more interested & want to see more experiments than women, that speedy left us when we start to burn something.

Well where I come from there is an enormous amount of diversity. People here come from all over the world and I think that plays a big roll in what I have observed. However, for the most part, the women that were interested happened to be from the ages of 25-40 and a good portion of them were southern white women who probably wouldn't be afraid to fire an AK-47 let alone a laser! My wife, being one of those women, isn't the least bit afraid of a laser, actually she likes them just as much as I do and she has her own!

The first time I showed my wife a green laser outside at night she said "I thought these things were stupid but this is awesome! buy more!". My blue one scares her though, shes scared I'm going to hurt myself since she thinks im clumsy. I'm not clumsy though, just forgetful, theres a difference

Wow, That's awesome, women here on Spain can slap your face as quick as an AK47 bullet when you shine a lil' laser near them. Women here (as men) can't have a firearm, (only small knives for personal use, and quick slapping hands). When I was in the army more than 25 years ago no women were allowed to be armed. Maybe ***ist country laws could affect guns/lasers? Yup, not many lasers seen here... but... WTH Laserist here have a hard face heheh, I've been slapped sometimes overnight, you know...

Just kidding...

I gave a speech to a bunch of middle schoolers not too long ago and the dudes where the ones asking all the questions, which didn't surprise me at all. Powerful and dangerous stuff usually is a man thing.

Almost everyone in my family is afraid of my lasers (mostly women). When they saw smoke coming from my boot I was burning, their imagination of what it can do seemed to intensify and blow out of proportion.
