Wish list, what kind of laser do you wish you could buy?

I wish someone made a 520nm 1.3 watt output laser with corrective optics and a beam expander in the head, that would be awesome but no one makes them for sale that I can find.

Anything you wish someone made? (edit: that is possible to make without using several ounces of gold to pay for).

Maybe someone can hook you up with someone who does, if they knew. Wish I could find what I'm looking for, put this thread up to fish for someone who can make one for me, or knows where to find one. If you are looking for something special you can't find either, please join in.

Re: Wishes can come true, what kind of laser do you wish someone made?

I wish you or someone could make one from easily available parts and then post a lengthy thread with lots of photos showing exactly how to do it.

Re: Wishes can come true, what kind of laser do you wish someone made?

I've seen builds which do the correction to the broader beams of multimode diodes with prisms and other optics, I've seen simple beam expanders you can buy as an add on, but I've never seen a pointer with one or the other, much less both built into a 520nm host I can buy. The optics can be had, that isn't the challenge, it's finding someone with the know how and willingness to build one matched up with the customer who will pay for it, I have half of that equation solved :)

There are master host builders in the forum, but throw in the added optics and the list grows short. I know someone is out there who has done this kind of thing for their own projects and can build such, but they aren't building hosts for others that I know of. I will keep wishing and hoping someone with the know how might see this and PM me :)

I have been talking to a machinist about building custom expanders for another project, this is separate from that, a pointer with built in optics for both beam profile correction as well as an expander built into a 520nm host is what I'm looking to find.

I wish someone made a 5mW Gamma Ray pointer, and yes still on that pointer craze :)

That being said, I just read an article about scientist creating a Gamma Ray laser by pumping Anti-Matter of some sort, was a pretty good read! They mentioned it could be used in the medical field IIRC

Sounds unlikely to become available soon, I know a matter antimatter reaction will produce Gamma rays, but to make antimatter you need a super collider like the LHD and a huge amount of power. So for now they can't make antimatter in any useful quantities unless someone discovers a new way. Besides that I am not sure there is a way to contain and transport it to be able to use it. We see the idea in Sci-Fi often but I have my doubts.

The problem with gamma rays is that they go through anything. You can't reflect them, so nothing will lase.

A 3W 550nm laser with a 1mm beam and
0mrad divergence.

ahh, unreasonable wishes, they have to be possible :p

No no no, Lightning, it must be a 3W fully tunable 400-700nm laser! (With your beam size and divergence of course.)

OK, now we are venturing in to pure wish territory, never to become reality.

The trouble with a gamma ray laser is that
you can't see it and it will give you
cancer. Either that or it will be very
heavy because it would need lead
shielding. It would need to be huge anyway
for a few reasons.

My opinion is, given enough time almost anything is possible. That doesn't say anything about being reasonable, though.

I would say "yellow" diodes (570nm-595nm). Since that might actually happen in 2015.

Oh, I didn't know they were coming, yellow laser diodes, that would be something. Maybe this is an unreasonable wish, but one with a wavelength of 555nm, the peak for our visual sensitivity, would be nice. For the tunable laser asked about above, here's one that will get you part of the way, except IR:

yup.

1mm beam
0mrad or as close as possible.
WL selector knob, 1nm incriments from, hell, why not 250nm -1000nm?
power selector knob, 1mW for first "click", 5mW for second, every click thereafter adds 5mW, up to 5W
focusable, not for burning as much as for a spotlight of any WL you wish, I'm sure a 1mm beam @5W and 0mrad would burn well enough

pretty sure every one here would trade every laser they had for such a laser

Are you listening santa?

Those aren't fully tuneable, but a
multi-diode module with a few different
wavelengths, AFAIK.

I was under the impression anti-matter only sticks around for a nano-moment then goes bye-bye again...

I'd like to see an honest-to-goodness lightsaber laser production. I don't mean the one guy who custom makes one in his laser shop for the cost of a new car. I mean like JetLasers, Scifi Lasers, (name a reputable laser company), etc. builds them for a few hundred dollars.

There's a couple of companies who make lightsabers that I know of:
The Custom Saber Shop
and
Real Lightsaber | FX Lightsaber | Build Your Own Lightsaber | Star Wars Lightsabers | Custom Lightsabers for Sale | Light Sabers | Ultra Sabers, LLC.
So, why can't companies make lightsaber lasers instead of lightsaber flashlights? I mean, don't lasers and lightsabers go hand in friggin' hand?!?

:wtf:
