I've looked up and down on the net and it seems everyone else is having trouble with this as well, but why cant I find any protected 32600 cells??

The only site that sold them (one other also linked them) says they are sold out... does that mean they are trash? They just sold them like crazy? Does anyone even have any of these on their person?

Why do they have to be protected? I don't own a single protected Li-ion and i've never had a problem. And I think I have.. 83.. scavenged 18650's the last time I counted. And a handfull of 18500's too.

Li-ions are as safe as you make them.

Lithium cells should be protected. if not, I wouldn't buy them myself.

protection is a circuitboard intergrated to the cell, it prevents short circuit and overcurrent events, where an unprotected cell does not. Ive learned myself first hand why protection is valuable, as I had an unprotected, fresh cell blow up during use..

Unprotected cell = potential bomb IMO.

EDIT:

here is a good example what those cheap chinese unprotected cells can do.
in this case it was charging. but Id prefer this thing not to blow up while inside a host, especailly with the kind of explosive power behind it.

Generally Li-ion explosions are caused by bad chargers overcharging them and making them unstable, and they go boom when a load is applied.

I always monitor every battery that gets charged so as I said. They're as safe as you make them.

I've been scavenging cells out of laptop battery packs for about 3 years now(long before I took on DIY portable lasers. Been dealing with gas lasers since the 90's though), and have used them for quite a few various projects and have yet to have one explode.. or even vent, on me.

I don't have ready access to a multimeter, but really want to use 32600s for my setup. You guys recommend against buying the unprotected in that case?

How many cells are you planning to use at the same time in your build? If it's just one, then unprotected is probably fine so long as you use a good charger and keep an eye on battery voltage. For multiple cell usage.. Yeah I would recommend protected cells then as well unless you know exactly what the condition of your unprotected cells are, as in, internal resistance, charge capacity, etc. And I don't mean manufacturer spec sheet numbers for these either. I mean actual numbers from testing the batteries.. which is something most people aren't willing to go to the trouble of building test rigs to measure.

So yeah, IMHO, as long as you keep an eye on them, unprotecteds are fine for single battery use, but multiple cell builds should be protected.

I need two 32600 cells in my build. Guess that means I need to wait until someone starts selling protected ones again or adjust for a different cell, which I really didnt want to do. Thanks again for your help

They're a special size for special applications. They assume the special application and its user are stable enough to not need internal protection. The protection only protects against abuse. If you never abuse the cells, there is no need for protection.

What about buying cheap protected cells and cutting out the board.
Solder that baby centered onto your big batt's negative and have at 'er ;)

Ok, after considering everything, I believe I will order some unprotected cells. It seems that the protected cells are extremely rare for this size cell right now and many of the experts are saying it's not really a problem. With 5000mah on the battery, what do I need to pay attention to with these? As in, is there a voltage drop as the battery depletes? When should I recharge them and is it possible to recharge them too early?

Is that possible?

It's possible, you might have to be a bit creative with how you anchor it to the bigger cell but if the clearances allow, you shouldn't have any trouble.
Keep in mind that it will add 1-2mm to the battery overall and it might be tricky to get it to stay on/soldered/taped on/hot glued/riveted/pissed off at the whole thing and thrown in the garbage....

I haven't done it before but you are limited only by your imagination on something like this.
A small amount of conductive adhesive might be your only option ;)

Thats the one I'm going to get. Saw it on your 2D Mag host thread. Looking forward to your heatsink coming in. :)

Ha. Sadly, that cycle would probably happen all too quickly for me. I'll leave that idea alone for a while, until I get a few lasers under my belt.
