This is why lasers are banned in australia due to idiots

I think one of the main problems is that there are so many cheap green lasers that put out relatively "high power" so its cheap and easy for the dolts to acquire them. I remember back when a 5mw green was very expensive. Also unscrupulous dealers who buy the cheapies in bulk, mark up the price and sell them at gift shops at tourist areas. They like the green because of the high visibility at night.

If they were to simply manage to get cheap green high powered lasers off the market the amount of laser vs aircraft incidents would probably start dropping off.. The dolts are not interested in the red ones, even if they are higher powered the visual effect just isn't as cool. And most of the dolts are not going to pay a high price for a laser. They like em because they are cheap and the effect is very dramatic. The downside is that cheaper lasers can be a nice entry point into the hobby for those who are sensible yet lack much in the way of funds. Even if the were to completely ban lasers there is always the hobbyist who can build them (often better quality too). Heck, when I was a kid long before the availability of laser diodes I remember seeing in science experimenters magazine the plans for building your own ruby laser. And back in the day we all either built or thought of building a gas laser (i.e HeNe).

Im certain there arent any laws that will stop this, it does not stop people from buying or making lasers that are more powerful than their countrys laws allow.

Stupid people do stupid things with lasers. Stupid people do stupid irresponsible things in general.
Are we to legislate a ban on potato cannons , i needed muratic acid to clean some concrete, took three phone calls , my name and info written down etc because some serial killer , somewhere dissolved his victims in it, guess fire will be next.

I feel for the Aussies, they cant even own guns anymore, the Uk is the same.

It does not stop bad people from doing stupid things, in fact, stabbings have gone up exponentially.

Actually hydrochloric acid (muriatic acid) is regulated because of it's use in the manufacture of certain drugs.
Either way I wouldn't mind a program to register lasers as long as it didn't involve jumping through a bunch of hoops just to own one. It probably wouldn't work because people would just ship them in under the radar the same way we all do now. Not to mention that if history has taught us anything it is that registration often results in an outright ban. Lol lasers would end up just like gun control. Law abiding citizens not being able to own them because they abide by the laws and criminals getting them any way because they already don't care about the law.

Absolutely , Canada is another good example.

Well that is unfortunate. Not only do they get themselves in trouble they are the main reason why lasers are prohibited in Australia

Unfortunately it seems that a few bad apples ALWAYS spoil the bunch. I really do feel bad for those of you living in australia. Is possession of lasers over 1mW illegal in australia or is it just the sale and importation?

Actually it's not regulated as it is used to etch concrete, and I assure you no one will ask what you are doing with it. Ephedrine HCl containing cold remedies are not regulated (still) because the pharmaceutical cos care about getting it out for sale. Methamphetamine is still a huge problem because the failure on the part of pharmaceutical co's to change it's practices in sales.

Going back to lasers, they have and will always have a legitimate use and banning them isn't going to solve a thing. Education will.
Look how well the drug war has gone. (not that I condone the use of drugs, because I sure don't!!)... it's a forever war and one that will never work. Education is ALWAYS the answer!

Ephedrine HCl most certainly is regulated, if you need sudafed which is kept behind the counter, you must show I.D. to purchase it.
My new apprentice worked in a pharmacy for 4 years, believe me , every scrip you have ever had is on record store to store across the Nation.

Muratic acid as well

Actually it is regulated

DEA list of chemicals - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Controlled Substances Act, 21 U.S.C. § 802, Definition 34 (list I) and 35 (list II).

PS we're talking about the US.

And with all that regulation drugs are still readily available. Only thing the ban does is discourage people who would use these things for legal purposes.

Laws involving drugs in the US are extremely arbitrary.

Exactly. Not to mention that the current drug laws in the US are extremely arbitrary for example the opioid pain medication fentanyl is 50x the strength of heroin but it is completely legal for medical use while heroin obviously isn't.
I posted the following in another thread recently

"There are a lot of other areas where cutting funding would be more practical for example (picks up flame shield) the war on drugs. Millions of our citizens locked in cages costing tens of thousands of dollars each year per person just for altering there state of mind in the privacy of there own homes. Decriminalize it, regulate it and tax it and this country would be much better off economically and socially. Before anybody pulls the "but what about our children" argument just know that NIDA did a study and it showed that most youths found it easier to purchase illegal drugs than it was to purchase legal drugs like alcohol and tobacco and the reason for that is because there is no regulation in an underground market, drug dealers don't ask for ID before selling drugs."

"While I don't think drugs like heroin are good to abuse keep in mind that (at least in the US) more people are killed every year by alcohol than ALL OTHER ILLEGAL DRUGS COMBINED. So you kind of need to adjust your opinion of what a "bad drug" is. For example heroin is illegal in the US but fentanyl (a drug that is 50x the strength of heroin) is legal for prescription use. Basically drug laws and what is considered a "bad" drug is pretty much arbitrary. Even when it comes to drugs like heroin what is worse? A person getting street heroin of an unknown purity or quality resulting in possible medical problems while also economically supporting violent drug cartels or on the other hand a person getting heroin from a regulated source where the quality and purity of the heroin is known and the person is monitored."

So from that you can see what my opinion of the war on drugs is.

What a load of crap:

How is that ANY different from say smoking and drinking...

Instead of "over $10 billion on drug education and treatment programs" how about regulating and collecting tens of billions instead.

I hate having voted for obama. Instead of the "Yes We Can" he's the "Yes I'll bend" president.

Yup... so many deaths from binge smoking these days! It's a wonder anyone makes it through college alive:shhh:

Edit: When's the last time anyone ran into a belligerent stoner? There is really no legitimate argument I can think of in favor of keeping marijuana illegal.

The most common argument is that it's a gateway drug... yes... but so are cigarettes, coffee, and to a much greater degree alcohol.

I don't think there is even much of a rope industry that needs protection from hemp in the US anymore... is there?
