Hi !
Just a quick question : what do you answer to people asking you : "why do you like lasers and why would you spend 200+$ on a laser"?
I usually answer "It's a crazy scientists thing", because if you just say "because it's kewl", they say "but still 200 bucks blah blah blah"...
So what do you say to people when they ask you these annoying questions ? "Shut up or imma blind you with ma big laser?"
When I bought my 300mW 532nm laser (around 200$ + shipping) people kept asking me "what's the use of that??" :gun:
So what do you say to these people ?

This is what my dad asks me. I tell him it's a hobby and he says something like "what'll you do, just shine it around'? And I tell him it's just fun.

If you know the person, try asking them why they like something that is useless like lasers and see what they say.

Lasers are really beautiful, burn stuff, can do really cool experiments with the light and for cnc.

Other than that they are kewl. :p

I like lasers just because of how interesting they are really. There are so many wavelengths out there, each with it's own unique properties & color it's amazing! :)

Point a 500mW green in the sky and you get a half mile radius of people calling the cops.
What a thrill!

On the more serious side, I would just answer the question with a list of common useless hobbies like golf where people spend hundreds of dollars on equipment to whack a ball with a stick. At least I can engrave, burn and light a fire with my laser.

Only thing a golf ball can do is put out windows and swim in lakes.

Edit: golf and many other hobbies are fun for people, even if they are useless.
You could say that most hobbies are useless and don't earn you anything except a good time.

YES! Exactly ! I live in Montmartre (highest point in Paris) and I just NEED to go up there and try to shine my laser all over Paris.. But there are always cops at night so I need to figure that out...
Maybe ask nicely and tell the guy that I might let him try it if he lets me :D

Because only lasers can do what lasers do, a light bulb can't hold a candle to the power of coherent light.

Never had someone ask me why I like lasers, but the reactions I get are mainly cheers from drunken people passing by, people saying "aren't those lasers for blinding pilots?" and "that's sick can you make me one?"

I guess I like them because they are kewl :D

People seem to not 'get it' when I tell them it's a hobbyist thing and whatnot; at that point all I can tell them is that "if you don't understand, it's not something that can be explained."

If you've ever read about Buddha and the flower sermon, you will understand exactly what I mean.

It's a hobby precisely it's unjustifiably something you just like. That said, I like they produce beautiful colored light, are sci-fi-ish, and it's having access to some esoteric piece of technology.

I fell in love with them back in high school, many light years ago.
Learning the theory of light fascinated me with these things but it's only recently that I started to get into it again.

I have been using a basic greenie for star pointing in my other hobby, astronomy, for a while but now I want to start my collection ever since I found LPF.

They are beautiful! That's why I love them, and the physics behind them is even more beautiful. The laser is one of they few places you you can really see quantum physics in action!

I firmly believe in the old saying 'if you have to ask, you probably wouldn't understand the answer' ;) I've always told anyone who asks this question -because they're awesome!
