Why do people call 635nm orange?

I see in quite a few person's signatures that their 635nm lasers are written in orange lettering. I finally got to see 635nm a day or two ago and I though it was a very crisp red color. Sure, it's a touch lighter than 650... but it was WAY closer to red than to orange. At BEST, it could be called red-orange. I think it's like alot of people calling 445nm blue (it's really a little to violet to be "blue").

I thought that 615nm was a very SOLID orange color... 605-610nm being a little closer to marigold and 620nm being closer to a darker orange.

Just my observations.

Most "knowledgeable" laserists do NOT call 635nm "orange." It is "orangeISH red" at best.

People just want some way to delineate between their 660nm laser and their 635nm laser.

I suggest YOU do better than they and do NOT call your 635nm laser "orange." I don't ;)

I DO call my 612nm HeNe "orange." :D

I put together an 11mW red the other day and I have to say my eye's can not see a difference with 650.

On the left is the 11mW 635nm and on the right is my O-Like 200mw 650nm. I think the power difference also has some effect on what color the camera is picking up.

Because it makes their signatures look cooler when they don't have real exotic colors. ;)

Perhaps I should call my 445nm... Baby Powder Blue....:whistle:

Dang, I bought 2 635nm diodes from Modwerx on my last order to have an Orange as I've read. Guess not.........:cryyy:
I did see that the more current you deliver them the frequency goes up. Some as high as 650nm? ie...5mw = 638.5nm & 7mw = 648nm.
I still have a few cheap red <5mw pointer I'll stick one into. I'll just set the current to 5mw and imagine it as Tutti Fruiti Orange.:whistle:

Once you see an orange laser, you will have no problem calling 635nm "red."

Most cameras don't have enough color gamut to clearly see the difference anyways. The power difference only compounds the problem.

Personally I call 635nm red and 650nm deep red.

Well......If I can tell its less red I won't be to disappointed. Maybe set it at the min on threshold current and squint? :undecided:
Ever feel like a cig butt that just hit the ground and someone decided to grind their foot on it to put it out? :( sigh.........lol
OMG...according to that pic Dave, those 780's I read abt are black lasers! :crackup:

Laser_freak, I'd have to agree with you the 650nm looks more orange in a pic at that mw.

Most people simply say that 635nm looks "brighter" than 650nm

780nm isn't "black." It is, however, firmly infrared. It is "near" infrared, but it is officially infrared.

It is not your skills. The written word just lacks info (para-language, context, and sub-text).

I saw the joke, but saw it as a laugh at the graph :yabbem:

Maybe I've just gotten callused by answering/reading questions from NooBs about black and brown lasers :banned:

Everyone has different color perception to ther eyes. To me, I can see the difference between 635 and 660. 635 has a bit of yellow in it but we call it red as we did with HeNe, the original benchmark for a red laser. We are witnesing now many wavelengths which we try to say is RED or BLUE or whatever.
Get used to it and learn nM.

635nm is orange-red to me, I wouldn't call it "red" and I wouldn't use it as red in a RGB setup. 445nm diodes should in fact be called indigo or royal blue, it's not true a blue, but definitely not violet either. I also wouldn't use 445nm in a RGB setup, I'd much rather use 460nm, but that is not an option so 445nm it is :undecided:. Not bad though.
