I need a low-power ( 5mw or less), low quality, very small size, simple diode but it has to be blue or green. Why are they so much more expensive than red ? I hope to use hundreds of these if my project is successful and need them in $2 range. Any ideas ?

Green is expensive because your not just buying a diode, but DPSS system including a diode, a crystal a lens ect.

Blue diodes are fairly new and there are very few types of diodes avalible, none of them are cheap

You can get violet diodes for 2$ a pop, they have a kind of blue-ish apearance to them.
