I just acquired a 20j ruby rod, I have an idea that its close to a 10 million watt pulse. I haven't done the math, its just a guess. I bet frothy or gguss could say for sure. The rod is almost 6 inches x 3/8th's.
:D

20J = 20 watts if the pulse is one second long. Since it will be MUCH less than one second, the power in watts goes waaaaay up. So, if you know how long the pulse is the math can be done to figure out peak power in watts :D

I want a ruby rod :(

Has anyone ever attempted to build a kW laser? I know a friend of mine back home recently bought a 1 kW infrared diode and have no clue what he is going to do with it yet.

I saw a 1kW diode array on ebay going for something like $900 some time ago. It most likely needs LOTS of amps at ~2.5V , you also need some pretty expensive and actively cooled optics to focus it as I imagine it would crack or melt regular lenses. And maybe needs deionized water cooling.
And don't forget the goggles!! :D Heck I wouldn't turn that thing on without an IR protection suit and helmet :D

And it probably has really big divergence and is hard to collimate because of the huge array.I think it's made out of ten 100W arrays.

A 1kW diode will need like 1200-1800A, and I bet most people will have a hard time getting that much power (Putting like 3 or 4 microwave transformers in parallel might do that, but then try rectifying it :p). And don't even start on the cooling  :p

It would be hardcore though, it would probably melt metal nicely ::)

I'm pretty sure the higher powered diode arrays have some dies in series and some in parallel to raise the voltage drop and bring down the current.

Some of them do. I've seen them on eBay, I think it was a 150-200W bar that took 14V :)

That's not even counting the electricity bill! :'(

To add to this topic, I'm wondering who has the highest output for a hand held laser here? Someone must have a hand held with an output of 1W or 2W I bet. I haven't been here long enough to see all projects done.

Billg519 has a 5W 808nm handheld I believe.

And you can't beat that :D Unless you count Scheken's mini yag that I'm not sure if you can operate by battery, but it has something like 3000W if you only count the pulse.

What about strongest visible handheld laser? :-/

You could use an inverter and a 12V battery to power that monster

A few people here have Herc lasers that do something like 600mW peak at 532nm!

GooeyGus had a Prometheus that could do 700mW PEAK at 532nm ! He sold it though , but someone still has it here :p

Electricity is the least of your worries. Assuming it eats 3KW, that's only ½¢/min.
