if I have to pick a handheld....

607nm
the ever wonderful transverse electromagnetic mode 00 :)
probably 500mW ish
host...probably a custom one...but I'd be fine with a PGL-C or something...

1 - Somewhere between 605 - 610nm
2 - TEM00 of course, though I wouldn't turn it down, even if TEM34.
3 - I'd say no more than 2W. Thopugh even 200mW would be nice and mellow. 2W would be nice to make beamshows with.
4 - I wouldn't know. I'd get some really slick Ehgemus or Crouse host, with a marbled blue and orange design. Because I'm all wonky like that, and it'd be wicked.

Transverse modes, in lasers, is shorted to TEM. It describes the visual output of the laser. The common one you know and love is TEM00. Which is one single spot. From there, you get TEM01, or TEM02 (also 10, and 20, and so on). TEM01 refers to two spots side-by-side. TEM02 refers to 3. TEM12 would have 6 spots (2x3). And so on.

You RARELY see multiple TEM modes in laser diodes. I never have. Though you frequently get them in DPSS. I misaligned a 473 during experimentation, and saw upwards of TEM44, TEM55, and so on. It was a wrecked laser by this point.

They also appear in a circular format.

Read more about it HERE!!

Thank you for explaining it to me, as you can see I was completely lost. Really appreciate it :)

Your "rules" suck. :p Since I can't say Argon-Krypron white light I'd have to say off the top of my head

488nm
TEM00
up to 2W (multiple powers like some 445s have would be ideal)
Either something similar to JL's PL-E Pro host or something totally custom.

Yeah I know the rules suck but I figured if I didn't set boundaries everybody's choice would be:

190-12000nm wavelength triple diode individually tuneable
TEM00
1-100W tuneable

LOL I know. Just busting your chops a bit. :na:

If I knew the wavelength for lemon yellow that's what I'd have put instead.

Actually without boundaries it'd be more like

5mW-100MW tunable

to where when needed one could say to the too curious:

"See, it's just a regular pointer"

or conversely:

"No officer, I have no idea what vaporized the IRS building while everyone was away for the weekend?"

I just joined LPF this week but already I know what my dream laser would be. That is, I'm trying to make a 445 laser gun sight. Some members in my thread on it have already helped me a bunch in understanding what I should be looking for/how to get it to work.

1) 445nm
2) Single mode diode
3) 50mW (tunable to a low output of 5mW without boundaries)
4) A durable black metal frame, waterproof, and zeroing capabilities.

We'll see what happens!

Right now, I'd like somewhere around 575nm single mode diode stable TEM-00 at about 250mW. The host can be fairly common as long as charging options are battery types are easy. That would be a sweet toy.

1W 589 single mode TEM 00 diode. With auto focus in a brass and copper rechargeable host.

The host would have this style engraving with 589 in gold inlay across the handle.

GunWEB2.gif

That kind of looks like the front to a fancy .45 .... is it? :p
