What type of screw is this?

and what kind of tool do I need to remove it.

I'm messing around with my projector and the laser Diode is attached using two of these bad boys. I can get them off with pliers but it would be easier and less abusive if I could figure out what type of tool I need for it.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks guys.

It looks like a small socket would work it had 6 grooves.

No idea to what kind of screw it is, but whatever it is it looks fairly non-standard.
Looks like a security style set screw (like the tri-winged ones, but a hex).

My way with these things is to use a milling machine and just disintigrate the screw while its still in place. (very stable and clean actually)
If you got access to any drills, mills, or the likes (even hand-drills will work) then it becomes fairly easy to get rid of these screws (although no reusage after the process obviously). I just use a drillbit the same diameter as the screw/bolt itself. (not the head, the body's diameter)

For taking out intact and reusing.. other then finding the tool for it, or using pliers, not much I can think of.

Use a dremmil or a file edge to cut a line or a X in it and just unscrew it?

take a 2W laser, put some goggles on, and burn it off! JUST KIDDING THAT WAS A JOKE. :beer:

Thanks for the suggestions guys, just got back form the store and I think a 5/32 standard socket will do the trick, they aren't on too tight so I'm hoping it will work fine without being a perfect fit.

It's an inverted torx (or e-torx, whichever you want to call it. Same thing) Generally the right sized socket will work in a pinch if they aren't super tight when dealing with them. Or if there's enough room, there's always vice grips.

IIRC I saw some like that in the ca5io projectors- I used needlenose pliers.

Same here. Needle nose pliers works great for the ones holding the diode array in the projector. Looks to be the same.

LOL at "vandal-proof" screws :crackup: ..... at least, these ones are symmetricals, so if they are not glued, a simple flat blade screwdriver with a slot of the right size filed in the middle of the blade can work (i think in some places they are also called "spanner screwdrivers", but i'm not sure, about that)

The worse vandal-proof screws i've ever meet had a collar, and in place of the slot, a 3mm protruding "rounded edges cone" with no slot (and, ofcourse, recessed 20mm inside the piece ) ..... it ended being a truncated cone with rounded edges, made in hardened steel, with a slightly oval shape (5mm dia on one axis and 5.2mm dia on the other axis, almost unnoticeable), planned to be used as "screw only - never unscrew" item ..... the screwdriver was a cylinder with the same internal shape of the head, also made with hardened steel, and you had to use it pushing hard on the screw when you're screwing it (otherwise, also his own screwdriver was sliding away) ..... f***ing b***ards :crackup:

You dont find this screw at te market. Many times manufacturers design their own screws to make sure nobody will open up their products. It is a Law thing for guarantee cases. Mostly you find those screws at electro powered devices or Toys.
" Torx " for example was a idea from french Car manufacturers but it turn out that this system was very clever and after a while the sold this patent rights and it came very popular.
I had a very expensive set Screwdrivers for Security Screws like yours but one Day it desapeard.
