What has this hobby ever done for me?

Hi to Everyone,

(To those who know me... I've missed you guys! *sniff*. To those who don't, keep reading, it is a positive answer to the question posed in the title!)

I first found this remarkable hobby somewhere around New Year 2009. I began with a fairly rudimentary knowledge of electronics, (I could recognise a resistor!), and was able to say, "Yep, that's a laser beam!", but that was about it. Since then I have learned, been baffled by, been amazed and rewarded in just about equal amounts. And I've built myself what I like to think of as a few pretty cool projects. That was up until my own economic recession bit my behind and the fun had to stop...

Priorities changed to finding some sort of income. Many applications later, and a couple of false starts, (Even tried Avon for a bit!!! ), I now find myself in gainful emplotment! Hooray!!!!

So how is this answering my own question? Well, the best thing has happened! Whilst in my local employment office, I found and applied for a technical apprenticeship. After a tough, and seemingly endless, testing process I found myself in front of a panel of interviewers being asked why I should be considered for the role. I simply showed them one of the projects I'd built; explained how it came into being and now I am looking forward to a 3 year Advanced Apprenticeship in Computing and Electronic Engineering! How cool is that?!!! (Actually the coolest thing is the company I'm doing this with. Well, not strictly a company... More of a governing body... ;))

All of this bright future, now lying before me, is because of this hobby and THAT is what it has given me. Almost exclusively, the credit for this has to go to LPF and the fantastic support, knowledge, members and supplies found here. I couldn't have done it without you!!!

This does bring me to a bit of a, 'downer', as this means I will have to move and my access to internet may well be limited. Never mind, I will pop back from time to time, as bad pennies often do.

All the best.

Never give up, and never surrender!!!

Congratulations on your apprenticeship!

Are you allowed to give any details, or will they set the MIBs on you? :D

Which MIBs? You've never seen any MIBs.

Congratulations man, I also learned some serious amount of physics here thanks to many members (and even built some projects with the generous help of others!). It indeed is an excellent forum :)

I've had one project so far, and even that went to hell, but I've learned a lot of things too. Mostly what I'd like to do with money I don't have right now ;)

And though you weren't among them (probably), I feel I gave knowledge to those who are in a similar situation as I was too. I hope you can continue to recycle your knowledge and anything you learn during your apprenticeship both into your own projects and into this forum :)

Even if I saw an MIB, I wouldn't remember now, would I?

I've got a good Idea on a sticky...LPF success stories. We can have a panel for qualifying stories and a space between posts for follow ups. What do you think?.

Oh and good job Morgan, may God be with you.

Thank you all. I think all who have replied so far have had some input in my projects, learning and, ultimately, this opportunity.

ThunderBird89: Details are tricky. Firstly, my contract forbids disclosure, (I'm not trying to sound superior or over secretive but the civil service in the UK is not known for its openness!), but mostly because I don't know any yet! It is all a bit cloak and daggery but I guess being treated like a mushroom will become the norm, (Kept in the dark and fed on sh:)t, for those unfamiliar with the term!). I will say that it will involve a lot of travel and working in, 'interesting', environments! However, I feel sure that when I find myself working at the Post Office, then I will already have had a visit from those MIBs!

Niko: You just crack me up! Never change!

Daguin: Nice to see you back. You disappeared for a while there. (Before I disappeared anyway).

Jerry: Your input has been particularly helpful. It's difficult to single people out for praise as there are so many, (Yes Rog, you would get a mention in my Oscar speech too!), but there are notable members who just seem to keep giving, and that gives the site much cohesion.

Rog: I never give to receive but if I'm in need, I'll drop you a line. I'm waiting on a price on some GGW-H20Ls, pre-extracted LDs, so I'll let you know if you're up for some of those?

jander6642: I don't think that's a bad idea. Difficult one to manage though? It should be encouraged to share these tales as they happen. It does show that people involved in this hobby are not just locking themselves away in darkened rooms popping balloons and lighting matches!

I will be keeping LPF updated as I progress. I will also give back, (time allowing), as my knowledge and confidence in that knowledge grows. Rest assured that I will be trying to build lasers into every single coursework project I can think of between now and completing the qualifications!!!!!!!!! Maybe I'll even be able to recruit some new talent?!

Keepin' it real...

M
