what happened to Alien laser?

After loosing $250(hopefully it will be retrieved) on Sci Fi, i spent $300 for Alien to build me a 7 watt 445nm. Soon after, the diode breaks:( I message him about it, and he says i can send it back, and he will fix it for $156 He also mentioned he would see if he had a 4 watt he could send me. I message him asking for an address, and have not gotten a response since. He always responds with in 1 hour of me messaging him, it has been over a week now. He never mentioned going anywhere, or not being online. His last activity was on the 29th last month. What do i do, did i just spend $300 on a paperweight:(

Update: he was on the site at 12 last night, but did not respond to one of my numerous messages. Is he avoiding me? I am freaking out over this right now.

You need to know going in that hand made "hobby lasers" can be over driven and under heatsinked and if not used with proper care and attention to duty cycle can be short lived. Hopefully you guys can sort it out. Good luck to ya

sure, do you have email i could send them to? The diode is dead, and i believe it was dust that killed it as it was an open can diode. It also could have been overheating, but this seems unlikely to me. Either way, i am stuck with a dead $300 laser, and no way to repair it.

I love the divergence of the nubm06, but I had mine wrapped in a cardstock lens holder and got it really hot, my 44's have survived really hot although I go with monster heatsinking now, and I get them warm but they last. The nubm06 needs heavy heatsinking as well or short duty cycles.

Anyway something about taking off the Gball seems to start the clock, I end up popping them, I have a working nubm07e that is Gball removed, but I will see how long it survives.

I am going to put a cylindrical pair and beam expander in front of my future Gball diodes with the Gball intact, pulling them just has not proven to be conducive to longevity.

The nubm06 Gball is not bad, at 5 meters its spot is 1.25 by 0.25 inches, but the nubm07e is 1.25 x 2.0 inches at 5 meters, 800% the spot area of the 06.

I hope there are successors to the NUBM44 but if not I will start working with the Gballs on, and the nubm06 I am sure is more like 5.5 to 6 watts.

I would stay at 4.5a and 5.0 absolute max with heavy heatsinking and limited duty cycle.

I've often been surprised at the lack of heat sinking of some of these higher power lasers. My highest power is a 3 watt that I put into a sinner MS-SW II which is huge and I still never leave it on longer than 90 seconds. That particular host is aluminum and the empty heat sink weighs 4.2 ounces and screws into the aluminum handle/ battery compartment that weighs 7.5 ounces empty and also acts to heat sink the module. I have a lot of copper hosts also that are used for builds from 1 watt to 2.2 watts. they weigh between 6 ounces and 10 ounces. I would have to put a 7 watt into something larger than these before I felt safe using them.

Agreed entirely! The new 3W silver series laser I ordered from Sanwu has a pretty thin host (~2.4 cm diameter) and that gets noticeably warm at around 50 seconds. Couldn't imagine 8 watts in there! I'll always be puzzled as to why people put such high powered diodes in such small pen sized hosts. The duty cycle must be terrible on them!
