Using a Blu-ray burner after extracting diode

As I was extracting a diode from my BDR-205, ripping off ribbon cable after ribbon cable, a though came across my mind. If I didn't already rip everything off the board, would it still be possible to still use the drive for everything EXCEPT burning blu-rays? It wouldn't really be too hard to extract the diode without destroying everything else, since it is conveniently in the most unobstructed location on the sled when everything is still put together. I don't know if the drive would freak out when it realized I stole one of its organs and there are wires leading to nowhere.

Yes, you can do so - someone replaced the diode in one with a cheap PHR, and it would even read bluray discs (not sure about writing). I think it detects forward voltage and might object if run without any diode in its place, though.

I remember a member here doing that. Really neat how something like that is possible.
